COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will expand their understanding of the intersections of mathematics, science, technology, and daily life, and will develop and apply critical mathematical and scientific reasoning skills through the examination of issues drawn from the real world and current events.

PURPOSE: The emphasis of this course is to encourage an understanding of how mathematics, science and technology are useful in your daily life and to encourage you to use quantitative and scientific methods to think about the things you see, read and hear. This course will be different from other math and science courses you may have taken in the past. The emphasis is on developing critical thinking skills and the mathematics and science topics discussed are the means to that end. Our main focus will be in talking and thinking about mathematics, science and technology rather than accumulating masses of facts.

UNIVERSITY-WIDE LEARNING AIMS:

Mount Royal University has identified four aims of an undergraduate education: Intellectual and Practical Skills, Integrative and Applied Learning, Knowledge of Human Cultures and the Physical, Natural and Technological World, and Personal and Social Responsibility. All courses offered by MRU emphasize one or more of these learning outcomes. This course will provide students with opportunities to:

1 Communicate understandable messages and to accurately interpret the messages of others through the use of appropriate vocabulary, concepts, numbers, symbols, charts, and numerical expressions.

    A. Problem-solving: Math, episode 1, (Discovery Education, n.d.) is a lesson plan that helps students understand the importance of numbers. In this lesson the objectives are to show the students the importance of numbers in math, and show examples of how they are used in everyday life. The students start out by watching the video, Problem-solving: Math, episode 1, and then talking about all of the numbers that they see in the classroom, such as the numbers on a clock or how many paint brushes or windows there are. The students are then asked to imagine a world without numbers and give ideas of how things would be different. They are then asked to write down examples of how they have used numbers, such as dividing candy among friends, being first in line, or being measured at the doctor. They are then asked to share these examples with the class and post them as a reminder of the importance of numbers in their everyday lives.…
