Summary
There is a world food crisis. Currently 790 million people are undernourished and around one third of the world’s children go to bed hungry. But their lack of food security is primarily caused by low incomes and unequal access to land, water, credit, and markets.1 There is no crisis of world food production on the horizon, despite environmental problems and a growing world population. Hunger will only be eliminated if governments and international organisations such as the World Trade Organisation implement substantial policy changes in favour of resource redistribution, poverty reduction, and food security. Technological fixes alone, such as genetically modified (GM) crops, cannot solve this problem, despite the claims which have been made for them. 2 The impact of GM crops for people in poverty, particularly in developing countries, could be negative. GM crops and related technologies are likely to consolidate control over agriculture by large producers and agro-industrial companies, to the detriment of smaller farmers. Leaving aside risk factors, GM crops could be of some benefit to poor farmers in the longer term if applications are directed to their needs and if intellectual property rules do not channel all the gains to companies. These conditions do not apply at present and require government action. There may be gains to low-income consumers flowing from reduced crop prices, if there are not effective monopolies in the supply chain. On the health and environmental side, we believe there is not yet sufficient scientific evidence to allow the commercial production of GM crops and that the ‘precautionary principle’ should be adopted.3 Regulation and monitoring in

    The first technique used in the documentary, GMO OMG by Jeremy Seifert, that I found very effective was the use of scientific research. This research helps to persuade the people watching the documentary that GMO’s are indeed harmful toward our healths. Jeremy interviewed a scientist named Gilles Eric Seralini who was a professor of molecular biology. He conducted a research on Monsanto’s 603 GMO corn to see the health effects caused by it. Seralini conducted his research in order to find out whether or not it would have a negative impact on the rat. Effects from the GMO’s were shown quite quickly after a couple of months as the rats had severe tumours in their livers and kidneys. Moreover, when the research of Seralini was out he was broadly criticized and numerous scientists stated that he was a fraud. The only other study that had been conducted was by Monsanto itself and even though the same type of rat was used, Monsanto resulted in opposite results to that of Seralini. They concluded that the GMO was completely safe. This was also a useful technique to use as it raised suspicion and doubt in the research of Monsanto because as no company would say anything negative about their own product in their results, Seralini’s results were more trustable. Moreover, this technique helped the viewers to be aware that the foods they are eating can cause potential harmful effects to them such as tumours.…

    After various testing performed by various scientists and experts it “is clearly evident, GM technology can quadruple its maize output, more than triple sweet potato output and increase banana output by eight times” (Wambugu 84).
