First of all, GMOs will not be ensured food security unlike proven organic foods which has been eaten for most of human existence.Regardless of the dangers, the foods have still been on our table without authorization. No one can assure that GMOs’ side effects won’t be long-term and continuous. Proving safety is impossible with the current technology we have.Dr. Schubert, a scientific expert says, “If there are problems, we will probably never know because the cause will not be traceable and many diseases take a very long time to develop.” We really will never know the long term effects GMOS have.Also, scientists claim that GMO foods can have medical benefits, by injecting a particular gene or vaccine into it. However, GMOs are only a temporary solution, they are not the solution for famine and medical benefits. But, their disadvantages cancel out their own advantages. The harmful effects are that, GMOs can cause food allergy reactions, indirect and non-traceable effects on increasing the cancer rate, and unknown effects on the immune system.According to GM food safety expert, Dr. Arpad Pusztai, “Changes in the immune status of GM animals are a consistent feature of all the studies.” Also, “The Russian Academy of Medical and Technical Science for Prime Minister Putin states that a “mysterious die-off” in the United States has claimed over 2,000,000 lives since 2008 and is “more than likely” linked to a “crossover” plant disease linked to genetically modified grains and foods.” Therefore, it is clear that GM foods are harmful to our health.
Second, transgenic crops have destroyed our environment and organic farming industry by contaminating their crop yields. Supporters of GMOs argue that transgenic crops possess harmful insect resistance and herbicide resistance helps to reduce the environmental contamination. Consequently, the change in resistance has resulted in being caught in a endless loop due to the birth of super weeds and super insect by spreading the foreign genes to them. The mutation by the newly engineered food has altered the ecology and destructs natural recovery. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency that regulates pesticides said that, “GMO crops often have posed serious risks to the ecology in 2000 because the crops which contained “plant incorporated pesticides” killed useful insects and produced the toxin by the plant as it grows.”
Lastly, GMO crops are becoming way too resistant to pesticides.Even worse, it is almost nearly impossible to destroy GMO crops like disposal of nuclear waste.Genetically modified corn contains its own foreign pesticide.The pesticide cannot be washed off before human consumption. Cows being fed this GMO corn are dying and rats are suffering from abortions too.Pesticide use has also noticeably increased with the popularity of GMOs.Most GMOs are now extremely resistant to certain brands of pesticide that ironically were sold to them by the same company that sold them the seeds.These “superweeds” are a major problem, because they’ll never be gone.
Finally, to prevent GMOs, it should be labeled and people should be recognized how dangerous GMOs are for us. As Stan M. Gardner MD,CNS points out, “We have a right to know what is in the food on the store shelf. The Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938 recommended food labeling, while the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 required ingredient labeling of food. If GMO food is so good for you, why do Monsanto and the corporate food industry put millions of dollars behind fighting this label?” Awareness is required to the people to recognize GM food’s health risks, GM crops damage to the environment,and foreign genes that we can’t get rid of. Environmental groups often call GMOs to Frankenstein foods because of their own foreign characteristics and the general public avoids the GMOs like a plague. The best way to sell GMO food in the grocery store is to give the consumer a choice.
