Genetically Modified Foods
Someone out there has probably wondered why their tomatoes which they bought at a supermarket, taste different than the tomatoes at a farmers market. Well to answer that curious person, the tomatoes from the supermarket are most likely Genetically Modified. Genetically Modified foods (GM foods) are organisms in which genetic material (DNA) have been altered in a way that is not natural. Basically they are inserting genes of another species into their DNA, the process is known as biotechnology. 45 percent of corn and 85 percent of soybean are genetically modified. Fulton states that “some 70-90 percent of processed food is genetically modified and has been that way for years” (“Politics Heating Up Over…”). The first GM plant was produced in 1983, an antibiotic resistant tobacco. In 1990 the first GM cotton was produced, from then on scientists and farms have tied to make everything genetically modified. It is important for people to understand what they are eating and how it was made. In the Agricultural Industry, GM foods are one of the biggest debates. There are so many reasons as to why GM foods are very controversial. Not only do they bring upon us many pro’s and con’s and are a well talked about topic in politics. The biggest issue is not whether or not we should genetically modified foods but rather if we should label it. In the United States, it is not a law that one must state if their food product is genetically modified or not. It should be labeled for many reasons but lots of people find ways not to label GM foods. In today’s paper the matter of whether GM foods should be labeled or not will be discussed as well as, mandatory and voluntary labeling, the government’s policies and many more information.

There are many pros and cons for GM foods, which is why there is a debate whether people should have the choice to eat them or not. Some of the negative portions of genetically modified foods like how harmful they could

    They have taken control of the crops and foods that consumers show great concern in this issue of biotechnology in foods. Thus, these GMOs should be taken with precautions and avoiding unintended harm to the environment and human health. Although there may be some benefits to GMOs, we should always be safe when assessing GM foods so that no one would be affected. Consumers argue that they should have the right to labelling in foods, however, there are already laws and regulations that exist that are able to maintain production and assess any risks in genetically engineered foods. The principle of reflexivity would be applied to the regulation of labelling.     What many do not realize is that in order to label these products effectively, we must develop standards that allow the labels to be equally and accurately distributed amongst all genetically modified foods. Certain questions must be answered, such as determining what percentage of genetically modified ingredients there are in a certain product in order for it to be considered for a label. Debates over whether the percentage standards should be .01% or 1% have been discussed, while other countries such as Japan have a minimum percentage rate of 5% (Byrne). In addition, the decision of labelling products produced from livestock that are fed genetically modified crops remains unanswered. This issue can be found irrelevant due to the fact that there is no difference found in meat, egg, or dairy products derived from GM fed livestock and non-GM fed livestock.     Genetically modified foods or GMOs (genetically modified organisms) resulted from “genetic engineering where scientists alter the genes of plant and animal DNAs for the desired specific traits” (Ackerman). In this case, GMOs have changes in their genomes and we cannot certainly tell how these changes can affect the consumers especially their health. In fact, according to Environment Canada, “Canada is the third largest producer of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the world”. As Canada being the third largest producer of GMOs, these products should have mandatory labels so consumers will be informed but currently, “labeling is [only] mandatory if there is a health or safety issue with [a] food” according to Health Canada. What will be the impact on consumers if GMOs in Canada are all labeled? In order to recognize the importance of mandatory labeling of GMO products in Canada, the benefits of labeled GMOs to the consumers will be elaborated and how non-labeled GMOs can have negative effects to the consumers especially their freedom of choice. Provided that, Genetically modified foods in Canada should have mandatory labels for consumers’ rights to know the products that can benefit and harm their health.…
