When someone mentions a ruling class our minds are easily swayed to the lessons about ancient empires and victorian monarchies that once graced our world. In modern day America these members of the ruling class are classified as the one percent; include the combined efforts of the government, owners of banks, and media who set the ground for social class in our country. The one percent determines what they believe is the best for their citizens although it may not fit the molds of each individual class.

The topic of social classes seldom discussed although it is a significant feature of American culture and livelihood.
Most Americans are treat this topic with great stigma since it down plays the common belief that every American has the potential of social and economic equality. Therefore people stray from discussing about this since it is not always held in a positive light. We believe that discussion about social classes will bring a great division between people instead, it does the exact opposite by creating awareness of the problems that ensue within each social class. As citizens of the United States our first Amendment rights state that we have freedom of speech and press. Most of the news we receive is nation wide and readily available at our fingertips. The problem is that there is not a collective consciousness in regards to where our media is coming from. There are six major corporations that own all of the media outlets in America and determine what propaganda is appropriate for people to see. Many media outlets cater to the interests of the middle and upper class while casually marginalizing interests of the working class. Information displayed in mainstream media is often filtered down for the general public to digest. Receiving information from the

Gregory Montsios talks about the different classes we have in America and how Americans do not like to talk about it. Myth 1 talks about the United States being a classless society. I find that very hard to believe. It is a good thought but not true. You see poverty all around you. In San Antonio we have homeless people all over the city. You see them on street corners asking for money or work. We also see the working class going to their everyday jobs. This can include the upper class as well. I really do not pay intention to the wealthy people living in San Antonio. I cannot imagine how many millionaires we have living in San Antonio. What frustrates we…

Although, one’s gender or race is not taken in count, social class has always part of America. One of biggest factors where one is placed in the social status is how wealthy or poor one is. For example, many rich people do not want to pay taxes so that their money goes to the poor who they think are poor because they are lazy and do not work. But, the truth is that the rich in America easily have access to opportunities and rights that the poor do not have. It is an ongoing battle the rich blame the poor and the poor blame the rich. However, in America the rich have the most power so the rich win the…

I remember watching and reading Super Size Me in middle school and Food INC. as well in high school. My initial reaction to Super Size Me was disgust. I found the way they treated chickens and how McDonald’s made their food disgusting. Just prior to viewing Super Size Me, I was already visiting fast food places like McDonald’s less frequently and after viewing Super Size Me I rarely ate at a fast food place. My visits to fast food places decreased at a rate to around once a year. However, as time passed my visits to fast food places slowly increased and by sophomore to junior year in high school I actually started to enjoy eating fast food again. By the time I saw Food INC around sophomore to junior year, I was desensitized to eating fast food because of the good taste, the speed, and especially the cheap prices. When I viewed Food INC for the first time in high school, I found it quite boring because I rationalized a belief that “food is food” so I didn’t care at all how food is made as long as it could fill my stomach.…

I believe alcohol is a depressant that alters perceptions, emotions, and senses. Alcohol first acts as a stimulant, and then it makes people feel relaxed and a bit sleepy. High doses of alcohol seriously affect judgment and coordination. Drinkers may have slurred speech, confusion, depression, short-term memory loss, and slow reaction times. I believe a vast amount of alcohol drunk in a short period of time may cause alcohol poisoning. Teens who uses alcohol can become psychologically dependent upon it to feel good dealing with life, or handle stressful situation. I believe, their bodies may demand more and more to achieve the same kind of high experienced in the beginning and . Some teens are also at risk of becoming physically addicted to alcohol. Withdrawal from alcohol can be painful and even life threatening. Symptoms can range from shaking, sweating, nausea, anxiety, and depression to hallucinations, fever, as well as convulsions. Alcoholism may start innocuously, due to the acceptability of social drinking, but over time, can lead to serious health problems, including brain, kidney and liver damage. I believe although alcoholics seem to be doing the most damage to themselves, they are hurting their families even more.…

Gang violence has been causing problems in America since at least the latter half of the 20th century. Many cities are subject to have large gangs and this by no means is a good thing. To name a few cities New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit have been known to be grounds for all different sorts of gangs. Whether it is a biker gang such as the Hells Angels, or an African American street gang such as the Bloods or Crips, all across America we are seeing the concerns over crime rate increase while the crime and murder rate have gone down. Chicago is one of the biggest cities to have been prominent on recent increase in gang violence. Most people blame inner-city violence in Chicago on the existence of gangs. But I think that the murder rate remains high in Chicago because of the amount of illegal firearms in circulation. Thus, I hypothesize that a decrease in the number of illegal weapons will result in a decrease in the murder rate. Criminals with no prior gun experience that participate in violent gang activities have caused the murder rate to increase twenty five percent in the last year (Venkatesh, 2012).…

Within Sociology I find comfort and motivation. It is a natural human interest to study the socialization of society. In today’s world, it is all about being in other people’s business. Look at Facebook and Twitter; websites designed specifically so that you can stay up to date with what people are doing. How pathetic, am I right? Throughout life, people earn a label for themselves. It is called fitting in, or being a function of society. Conflict exists to make life interesting. Without social drama, the world would not be the same place it is today. The media fiends off celebrities screwing up, and purposely works hard to expose the truth behind people’s lives, which honestly, I do not care about. Why is it we have to be so nosey and curious? There is no clear answer for that question. People have acted like this forever, and my guess is history will keep repeating itself.…
