Globalization Essay

What factors have contributed to Globalization?

The term “globalization” has only become commonly used in the past twenty odd years but, in fact, many trade economists have utilized it and taught about it for decades and even centuries. Globalization is defined as the process of international integration arising from the interchange of worldviews, products, ideas and other aspects of culture. It is, in other words, the escalating familiarity and interlinking of numerous economies and societies in the world. Globalization has been driven by a large number of various factors some of which I will elaborate on.

The primary factor of globalization is disputed and therefore controversial but in my opinion it is travel and tourism. Humans have always felt the need to visit new places, see foreign things, hear different languages and interact with distinctive cultures. We want to explore the unknown and we always will want to, therefore I think it is one of the most contributing factors. Without travel and tourism the world would not be so interlinked. Ideas concerning the economy and the society are seen in overseas countries and consequently applied in others.
Nowadays, travel is becoming more and more popular due to the minimal time it takes. There is a continuous increase in the movement of people and workers around the world. Intellectuals from underdeveloped countries seek life in the urbanized and industrialized countries in order to utilize their skills efficiently and earn a fair living. It is now very straightforward to cross borders so therefore travel will almost certainly always be a driving factor of globalization.

Advanced technology and the sharing of skills have resulted in the reduction of transport costs. Transport is used for trade, social means (travel) and immigration and it has become ever cheaper and faster. There has been a drastic fall in cost of shipping due to the developing improvements of containerization. This is the mode of transport of freight on ships overseas.
The cost of shipping has dropped by over 70% in the past 20 years, which has, as would be expected, heightened trade flows. The cost of transport continues to decrease, not only because of containerization but also, because of more businesses bulk-shipping. This is a benefit to the business that is shipping, as it is more cost-efficient and economical.

Another factor driving globalization is the growth of Multinational Corporations (MNCs). An MNC is a firm that fabricates its good or service in at least one country outside of its motherland. Multinationals usually operate in a handful of countries, creating links between their economies as the firm’s flow of production, sales and profit would rely on all of them.
The number of MNCs is slowly but surely increasing due to the bigger opportunity, expansion, increased shareholder value and maximized profit. It is becoming more and simpler to become an MNC due to the other factors driving globalization such as reduction of trade barriers, lower transport costs and advanced technology. A lot of companies become MNCs in order to be able to produce their goods in lands where labour is cheaper. Lots of the manufacturing and labour will be done in less developed countries where the minimum wage is lower. It is said that Multinational Corporations exemplify global interdependence.

Globalization is not only driven by businesses with the motive of expansion and profit. The governments of the world are working together today to a higher degree than ever before in order to keep the economies stable and to prevent another Great Depression which could affect anyone. This is motivated, not only by the free market but also, by the idea that the governments must maintain healthy relationships so as not to obstruct trade. The governments basically encourage and support national businesses to expand across borders because it results in a stream of profit back into the national economy.

As we can see there are numerous factors driving globalization, a large part being due to political and technological developments. But, in my opinion, it is the actions of businesses in the world that accelerate the process most in this day and age. Globalized companies are known to achieve higher profits and they also have a more dominant position in the global markets. Their production is more cost-efficient as there are lower unit labour costs, and the reduced trade/technological barriers make it tremendously trouble-free and facile for them to thrive. In addition, the product life cycles are extended, as the firm is present in more than one market, which leads to maximized profit. The motivations for successful businesses to operate globally are strong and attractive, hence the augment of Multinational Corporations and overseas trading.
With trade becoming easier and technology becoming increasingly advanced and drastically cheaper, I expect the process of globalization to continue to propel further forward in the near future.

According to the research of Bishop et al (2011), the concept of globalization came into being soon after the world started to get connected at initial human history. The authors argued that increase in transportation and technology, the liberalization of trade policies between governments, increase in the inequalities between nations, and increase in inequalities of earnings between people of a nation are some of the major drivers of globalization. Fritsch (2011) in his study also argued that technology is not the only force behind globalization. In his study, he identified that technology has a great role in contributing to the increased globalization. However, there are many other factors that played equal part in driving globalization.…

Globalization is the trend towards a single, integrated, and interdependent world. Some humans may not even realize globalization plays a part in our modern lives, but examples that may be classified as evidence of this trend include: the ability to buy products from dining cuisines belonging to myriad of different ethnical cultures, a joint project in which a multinational group of astronauts are sent to the moon, the visit of a Canadian circus troupe to China, the establishment of international and intercontinental trade agreements, and the ability to watch a live television broadcast from a foreign television station. These examples are made from looking at globalization as a whole, but from an economic perspective, the definition of globalization changes. “A phenomenon by which economic agents in any given part of the world are affected by events elsewhere in the world; the growing integration of the national economies of the world to the degree that we may be witnessing the emergence and operation of a single worldwide economy.” (Arnold 41). This definition is still very closely related to the aforementioned denotation; in fact, the meaning behind the words is the same. In other words, globalization is the growing liberalization of international trade and the movement of capital, resulting in the increase of the integration of national growing economies. Our modern world is a prime example of a civilization that is undergoing globalization. By examining the observable effects of globalization on our world, we can determine whether ambiguous and advancing neoliberalism is beneficial to our economy. Upon the assessment of globalization through the factions of or relating to economics, such as trade, the worldwide market, flowing capital, standard of living, placement of jobs, and international dependence, it would not be a stretch to say though there are unfavourable side effects, they are outweighed by the benefits and globalization is a…

Secondly, improvements in transportation have shrunk the world considerably in terms of time taken to travel from on place to another. Containerisation has reduced the time and money taken to move goods over long distances. It has greatly simplified the transferring of goods from one mode of transportation to another as containers can be easily transferred from ships to trucks. In a globalizing world, there is an increasing mobility of goods and people. Countries have built efficient and integrated transportation infrastructure to facilitate this movement. The efficient transport network worldwide made it possible for goods to be moved across the world. At the same time, it also meant that people could travel easily. Hence, it is a significant driving force of globalization.…

All definitions of globalization have key components that are responsible for the globalization that we observe today. These certain factors that are necessary to adequately define the term cannot be summed up with a one word or simple phrase definition. Globalization is elaborate and has evolved tremendously over the past century. In order to break this term down to the core and give it a simplistic definition we must focus on what main events have occurred throughout this past century to make globalization such a widely used term and popular current event. Globalization certainly has a history but the term itself is constantly modernizing and a proper explanation of the word should reflect more of its modern roots. Therefore globalization is most accurately defined as the increase of Westernization/modernization of the world. This explanation sums up its current relevance and it contains historical reasoning as well.…

Globalization is a continuous process through which different societies, economies, traditions, and cultures integrate with each other on a global scale. This is made possible through the various means of communication and the interchange of ideas. Globalization goes all the way back to the Silk Road. It ran across central Asia, connecting China and Europe. The Silk Road made it possible and easier for the exchange of goods between the two which would have been virtually impossible otherwise due to the great distance between them. (Mann) The extreme advances in technology, travel, and telecommunications over the past 30 years are responsible for the recent huge increase in globalization. The period from 1980 through the present is the most remarkable period of globalization to date due, in part, to the elimination of hindering causes which was made possible by the improvement of telecommunications, transportation, and technology. Some other periods of increased globalization occurred between 1945 and 1980, when there was a huge increase in international trade after World War II and 1870 and 1914, which sparked World War I.…

Globalizing processes are dismantling obstacles to movement. As a result, there has been an increasing flow of people, goods, services, ideas, technologies and information across international borders. In simple terms, globalization is defined as a ‘process that widens the extent and form of cross-border transactions among peoples, assets, goods and services and that deepens the economic interdependence between and among globalizing entities, which may be private or public institutions or governments” (Lubbers 2000).
