Globalization And Education In Hong Kong Case Study
Globalization has been a popular topic of concern for the twenty-first century. Globalization has positively influenced education in different ways. It has brought different people, ideas and resources in a world- wide pool to make the world into a global society. I am particularly interested in how globalization affects teaching in primary schools in Hong Kong where the articles and references are mainly focusing on the influence to higher education. This essay is attempted to explore the relationship between globalization and primary school education in Hong Kong. There were mainly 7 initiatives in the educational reform. They are curriculum reform, support for school, language education, professional development, student admission systems, assessment mechanisms and increase in post secondary education opportunities. People with different cultures influence each other and to modify each other’s cultures. Generally, culture could be viewed as a way of life sharing between groups of socially interact people. The Whole School Approach was changed to Integrated Education in Hong Kong primary and secondary schools in 1997. Students with Special Education Needs are placed in mainstream schools where they learn from peers in the meantime. Education Bureau, 2000 stated that the introduction of Integrated Education was to help students, teachers and parents to recognize, accept and respect all individual differences and backgrounds. Mainstream classrooms are full of children with different personalities, backgrounds, abilities and learning styles. Demand for education is growing, since the handover of Hong Kong from United Kingdom to China, more and more parents from Mainland China are sending their children to schools in Hong Kong as they realize Hong Kong is an international city with multicultural identities. Alongside with the Mainland China students, there are students from minority ethics, such as Nepalese and Indian. The government of Hong Kong encourages non- Chinese speaking students to study in mainstream schools in order to integrate into the community as soon as possible. The government also provides support services and induction program to those newly arrived
