ABSTRACT
MODELING THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON WATER RESOURCES
CASE STUDY: ARKANSAS RIVER BASIN IN COLORADO
There is mounting evidence that amount of carbon dioxide is being increased which can lead to changing the global climate drastically during this century. Climate change can have important effect on the water resources and water demand like urban and agriculture uses. The effects of climate change have been explored in the Arkansas River Basin in Colorado which is one of the major rivers in Colorado that provides water for 650,000 people a year and irrigates around 280,600 acres of agriculture areas. The aim of this research is to project precipitation and temperature in smaller temporal and spatial scale by MAGICC/SCENGEN tool and model the impact of climate change on the water resources by water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) software to provide results for the water managers and policy makers.
Two climate scenarios (A2 and B2) and a 550 ppm policy were used to project future temperature and precipitation in the Arkansas River Basin for the period of 2013 to 2040. Based on the results from the two climate scenarios, a warmer and drier climate is anticipated for the region. Three adaptation scenarios (new irrigation technology scenario, new irrigation technology along with crop change scenario, and new irrigation technology along with reducing crop area scenario) were analyzed to consider their effects to mitigate the negative impact of climate change in the Arkansas River Basin.. This indicates that globe warming is a potentially very serious problem for water management in the Arkansas River Basin. he Greenhouse Effect refers to a naturally occurring phenomenon that is responsible for maintaining a temperature that supports life on earth. However, this is often confused with the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming.

There are a number of definitions of what the “greenhouse effect” means. The first is the “natural” and the other is the “man-made greenhouse effect”. To define both of these terms the “natural” greenhouse effect keeps the earth warm and habitable. The “man-made” greenhouse effect is basically the natural greenhouse effect but with an addition of gases from the fossil fuels that are burning. Greenhouse gases slender the rate that the Earth’s surface loses any infrared radiation to outer space which in turn makes the lower surface’s a lot warmer then usual.…

Climate change in the southwestern US includes above averagetemperatures, and less rainfalls. These changes are contributors to the water shortage. GeoscientistBrad Udall, director of the University of Colorado Western Water Assessment, estimates the climate change will contributeto 5-20 percent of water loss in the next forty years. While the climate changedoescontribute to the water shortagein the region, it is not the main factor.…

Victoria's water resources are likely to become increasingly vulnerable to climate change, due to projected drying trends over much of the state. At the same time, demand for water may grow as a result of increasing population, warmer temperatures and higher evaporation rates. These impacts could, however, be offset if we get more rain in summer.…

Greenhouse Effect is the trapping the heat inside the planet’s atmosphere. This occurs due to the gasses that are present in the Earth’s atmosphere. These gasses are Water vapor(H2O), Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4) ,Nitrous oxide (N2O), Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). These gasses are produced by various amounts of human activities.…

Global warming is an increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. The Greenhouse Effect is the trapping of the Sun’s warmth in the Earth’s lower atmosphere. There are two main causes of the Greenhouse Effect. The first one is Natural Greenhouse Effect and the second one is Enhanced Greenhouse Effect. Both of these causes contribute to Global Warming.…

The Earth’s climate is changing primarily because of human activities (Sims, 2004). The US, being a heavily populated and industrialized country, is a large factor in the recent climate change. The consequences of these changes are numerous and extremely consequential. Changes in the environment already present include carbon dioxide levels rising 31 percent in the past 200 years (Sims, 2004). El-Nino events and instances of flooding from high precipitation have become more frequent and persistent (Sims, 2004).…

Two degrees of warming worldwide seems abstract, but bridge-collapsing, home-destroying, killer floods are the sorts of weather events that can bring the impact of climate change home. A certain scientist named Bersugli investigates the potential for heavy rain and flooding due to climate change. He notes that models predict an increase in winter precipitation but that the spring and summer, which are when Boulder is prone to large rain events, are expected to have an overall decrease in precipitation. Climate models clearly show that precipitation extremes can become larger even in areas experiencing unchanged or decreasing total precipitation. In that circumstance, rainy days would become less frequent, but if conditions are right for an extreme event, and more moisture is available in the atmosphere, than larger extreme events are possible.…

Water is one of the most important substances on earth. Ultimately, as it is a substance essential to life itself, it is the world’s duty to ensure that every drop is utilized and to the maximum of its abilities. We should not forget that this substance is still sustaining life on planet earth. Some organisms are made up of 95% water, while almost all the rest are more than 50% water. Water is being consumed by humans in every aspect from drinking and bathing purposes to producing crops, supporting livestock and fish farms, shipping goods, generating electricity etc. Yet climate change is producing profound changes in this…

This project looks at a select watershed in Michigan and how the various characteristics of that watershed affect runoff from predicted storms. The chosen watershed was the Tobacco River that flows into Lake Superior Tasks were performed to first delineate the watershed, calculate the soil and land use, use that data to predict a 100 year storm, and to delineate the watershed using ArcGIS. The area and the perimeter of the watershed varied greatly between the hand drawn delineation (260% error) and the ArcGIS because of missing a large tributary into Tobacco River that greatly expanded the area. Assuming the hand delineation was an ok representative of the watershed, the hydrologic model found the total abstraction to be 4.82 inches, a peak discharge of 217 cfs, and a basin lag time of 11 hours. “Stream flow of the Colorado River Basin is the most over allocated in the world. Recent assessment indicates that demand for this renewable resource will soon outstrip supply, suggesting that limited groundwater reserves will play an increasingly important role in meeting future water needs” (Castle, et al.). This is primarily due to the large market for crops from farming in the western United States. Farmer’s are implementing the use of new technologies such as automated watering systems in addition to in-ground wells to maximize their crop production while lowering their economic cost. At this current…
