Causes and Consequences of Global Warming
In the mid-twentieth century the earth’s average temperature is increasing due to the fact that global warming is taking place. Global surface temperature has increased about a degree in the past century. The progressive gradual rise of the earth's surface temperature thought to be caused by the greenhouse effect is responsible for changes in global climate patterns. An increase in the earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures is widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting from pollution. Atmosphere carbon dioxide (CO2) is known as a Greenhouse gases, which means the increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can lead to global warming which could affect the world’s environment. Scientists have determined that humans are responsible for the increases by use of cars, industries, and forest fires. An increase in the amount of carbon in the air results in more acidic rain which may cause harm to the environment, the water we drink, and the vegetables we plant. The way that these temperatures are increasing it is projected to rise 3-8 F by 2050. The three focuses of the global warming theory are Greenhouse Gases, the possible effects of greenhouse gases, and ways to limit greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap the sun's energy and thereby contribute to rising surface temperatures. The main greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change is carbon dioxide (CO2), a byproduct of burning fossil fuels. The oceans are more acidic due to the worldwide emission of carbon dioxide just from burning fossil fuels. The oceans tend to have natural alkaline and when interacted with carbon dioxide the natural alkaline decreases making the ocean become more acidic. The increase of acidity lowers the concentration of carbon ion which is a calcium provider that helps marine wildlife to build their skeletons and create coral reef structures. “The amounts of carbon dioxide are produced from the burning of

Carbon Dioxide (CO2), a chemical made up of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms, is a non-flammable, odorless and colorless gas that exists naturally in the atmosphere. CO2 is one of the greenhouse gases, amongst methane, nitrous oxide and other gases, which keeps the Earth’s temperature habitable (UCAR). Without it, the Earth will be inhospitably cold. However, ever since the mid-nineteenths century, humans have significantly increased the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere, creating an imbalance. The gradual increase in CO2 concentration have been driving what is called global warming, which describes the current phenomenon of the increase in temperature of the Earth's surface and…

Over the last century global temperatures have increased rapidly, and this period has been called global warming. However many have disputed how this rapid increase in the change in the temperature have been brought about. There is a general agreement among scientists that the changes in the climate over the last century are as a result of human activities. They have reached this consensus as they have been able to link the sudden change in rate of the temperature increase to the development of industrial activities beginning with the industrial revolution. The industrial activities that our modern civilisation depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels causing a rise in the amount of greenhouse gases that insulate the Earth. These extra emissions of greenhouse gases have led to a thicker layer of greenhouse gases present in the Earth’s atmosphere. The main causes of this rise in greenhouse gas emission are fossil fuels. The burning of these fossil fuels has allowed us to develop, both economically and technologically, which in turn has enabled us to advance as a civilisation. However the use of these fossil fuels has…

There are many questions about global warming, from its causes to its effects, and many people even question whether or not it even exists. Global warming is described as the increase of the average temperature of the Earth caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities, such as deforestation, use of fertilizers, fossil fuel combustion and cement production. According to the global warming theory, the intensification of industrial activities during the twentieth century (based on the fossil fuel combustion such as petrol and coal) increased the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.…

The greenhouse effect is the natural process by which the atmosphere traps some of the sun’s energy, warming the Earth enough to support life. Without the greenhouse effect the Earth’s average global temperature would be -18C rather than the present 15C. Since the Industrial Revolution gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide has been added to the earth’s atmosphere (GBRMP 2009). This causing the concentration of the greenhouse gases to increase those making the Earth warmer than usual (GBRMP 2009). By year 2065 the CO2 levels will increase by double, contributing to a rise in temperature by 0.3C every ten years (GBRMP 2009). As the greenhouse gases increase this results in the sea temperature to escalate 1 to 2 C ultimately killing the corals (GBRMP 2009).…

According to the model and other readings, carbon dioxide contributes the most pollution resulting in climate change. CO2 has always been in the atmosphere naturally to allow for some heat to be reflected, but with the creation of cars, planes and other fossil fuel reliant items, such as electricity, the amount of CO2 produced has increased and its relfecting for sunlight back onto earth and releasing less. Deforestation also has contributed to the CO2 increase. When trees are burned, the carbon they store within them is released. The more CO2 relaeased allows for more CO2 to become trapped in the oxzone allowing more heat reflection , increasing temperature.…

Climate change is one of the emerging issues for global environment. It may be defined as the long-term change in average weather conditions, including temperature, precipitation and wind. This is already apparent as evidenced by higher temperatures, rising sea levels, increased ocean acidity and ice melt. Global surface temperatures, alone, have increased by roughly 0.74 °C (1.33 °F) between the start and the end of the 20th century. Natural causes alone cannot explain all of these changes. Most of the warming of the past half century has been caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases. This gases act like a blanket or glass roof around the earth, trapping in heat that would otherwise escape to space – this is commonly referred to as the “greenhouse effect”. From the end of the last Ice Age about 10,000 years ago to the end of the 18th century, the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere remained fairly constant and at a level sufficient to sustain life as we know it today. Since the Industrial Revolution 200 years ago, mankind has been releasing unprecedented amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which trap more heat, amplifying the natural greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most significant greenhouse gas released by human activities and is emitted mostly from the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas. Other greenhouse gases include methane and nitrous oxide. Without effective action to halt the rise and then reduce the levels of greenhouse gases released by human activity, countries worldwide and their citizens face significant changes in food and water resources, health and living standards as they are forced to adapt to a changing climate. It is predicted that society will face disruption from extreme weather, with more frequent storms and flooding, more severe droughts and heat waves, which will result in a loss of agricultural land and biodiversity. In many regions agriculture will be adversely affected by…

One of the most challenging existing environmental problems is global warming. This refers to the change in climate that leads to an increase in the average atmosphere temperatures. Global warming is caused by a number of factors, but it is primarily associated with human action and more especially the excessive release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. An example of these human activities leading to increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere include burning of fossil fuels (oil, coal and natural gas). These greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, water vapor, fluorinated gases and methane. These gases trap the sun’s heat from escaping back into the space. It is undeniable that over the past five or so decades, global warming has been the trend; society and the world has to be informed on the mechanisms through which the consequences of this condition can be lessened. This paper aims at explaining the greenhouse effect as the principal issues behind global warming, the effects suffered from global warming, and the efforts taken to combat the condition.…

eThe phrase global warming refers to the documented historical warming of the Earth's surface based upon worldwide temperature records that have been maintained by humans since the 1880s.It is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans. In the last 100 years, this temperature increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F) with about two thirds of the increase occurring over just the last three decades.According to the exponentss of the concept, the likely effects of a further warming at the same rate include a rise in sea levels, change in the amount and pattern of precipitation,a probable expansion of subtropical deserts, more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events including heatwaves, droughts and heavy rainfall events, species extinctions due to shifting temperature regimes and changes in agricultural yields.Although there has been a controversy, significantly more pronounced in the popular media than in the scientific literature, regarding the nature, causes, and consequences of global warmin, there is a strong consensus in the scientific literature that global surface temperatures have increased in recent decades and that the trend is caused mainly by human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases. No scientific body of national or international standing disagrees with this view, though a few organisations hold non-committal positions…

We Human Beings have created an imbalance between life and nature that has led to flood, cyclones, landslides, tsunami, drought, etc. If this imbalance continues, soon our life on earth would be difficult. The increase of Carbon-dioxide in air is one of the reasons for warming the earth’s surface. The most significant greenhouse gas is actually water vapor, not something produced directly by humankind in significant amounts. However, even slight increases in atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) can cause a substantial increase in temperature. When the earth’s surface warms up it will eventually lead to evaporation of water. Water vapor, itself is a greenhouse gas. It is believed that the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere…

Global warming is based on the notion that the earth temperatures are increasing due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels. The increase in temperatures is caused by the increasing emission of carbon dioxide, CO2, into the atmosphere that is associated with trapping heat hence the greenhouse effect. According to Maslin (2007), human activities that include burning of fossil fuels are the main causes of global warming in our planet. The effect of increasing global temperatures is the main cause of changing global climate, which is the main effect of global warming (Haldar, 2011). This further affects different climatic regions in different ways such as faster melting of the glaciers in the arctic, famine and…
