Parenting the Unborn, Newborn and the Baby:
A guide to the module
Introduction and Overview
At this point in your study of the parental role, you should have a fairly clear idea of who the parent is and what is expected of parents. You should also be aware of the variety of ways parents can use to fulfill their role. Finally you have learned a process for thinking through how parents can go about determining how they want to parent. Using this process parents are guided by their beliefs and values. They also take into consideration such factors as their children's temperament pattern and learning style. With this background we now start looking at the parent role during different stages of development. With each stage you will find that the parent role stays the same but how it is implemented changes as the child changes. During each module you will be asked to list what parents can and should be doing to facilitate their child's development. You will also be asked about issues and possible situations parents frequently face. You should draw on your readings as well as your experiences to support your responses. Be sure to document your readings.

During this module, you will learn:
•What parents can do to protect their unborn child. •How parents can prepare for nurturing their child. •Multiple ways parents can meet the baby’s basic needs. •What the infant is trying to understand and what skills the infant is trying to master. •What babies can learn that will facilitate their future growth. •Ways parents can support their children’s efforts to learn and to become competent.

    Before a child is even born the parents are adapting theirs lives getting ready for it to change into something they can only imagine what it will be like. A process of bonding is their when the child is born, imagining what it would be like to hitting reality of what parenthood is like.     The newborn is a miracle of nature, the results of forty week of never to be equaled growth and development (Hamilton, 1998). Inside the uterus, the fetus grows into a tiny being capable of survival through the help of the mother. The fetus is fully dependent on the mother’s circulation for oxygen supply and nutrients through the umbilical cord. It is inside the womb that the body receives warmth and protection from the dangers of the outside world. Birth, according to Maslow (1998), is associated with most drastic changes that ever befall a human being. In extra uterine life, all functions of the body undergo a radical change and a sudden adjustment has to be made from a dark, warm fluid-filled environment to a strange world before him. After birth, the infant must learn to do the vital function by his own. More so, learn to initiate other processes that the human body performs. It is in this stage that a process of moving from total dependence to independence begins. However, the child will continue to rely on others for immediate care, physical health, psychological growth, mental stimuli and emotional support. The infant will be able to function effectively provided that he receives the utmost care from the caregivers around him. If the infant is to survive the neonatal period, three conditions are necessary: that he be in good physical condition, that he experiences a safe delivery and that he then receives good care (Marlow, 1998).it is the nurse's responsibility, as an essential caregiver to provide the infant with care, attend to his needs, maintain.
