The Global Market for Biosurfactants and Segment Forecast to 2020
The global market for biosurfactants is expected to reach USD 2,308.8 million by 2020, according to a new study by Grand View Research, Inc. Escalating consumer preference towards the use of bio-based products, particularly in Europe and North America is expected to increase biosurfactant penetration. In addition, stringent regulatory policies are further expected to augment the biosurfactant demand over the next six years.

Methyl Ester Sulfonate (MES) was the largest consumed biosurfactant, accounting for 33.26% of the 344 kilo ton global market in 2013. Its superior properties in terms of foaming and stability as compared to other surfactants make it ideally suited for use in household detergents. Other key biosurfactants include Alkyl Polyglucosides (APG), Sorbitan Esters and Sucrose Esters, with combined demand estimated at 115 kilo tons in 2013.

The report “Biosurfactants Market Analysis and Segment Forecast To 2020,” is available now to Grand View Research customers and can also be purchased directly at http://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/biosurfactants-industry

Further key findings from the study suggest:

• The global biosurfactant market is expected to reach 462 kilo tons by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 4.3% from 2014 to 2020.
• Household detergent was the largest application segment, consuming 153.5 kilo tons of biosurfactants in 2013. Growing demand for sustainable products in cleaning applications is expected to boost the demand for biosurfactants over the forecast period.
• Personal care applications are expected to gain significant share owing to the growing market for these products in Asia Pacific. In addition, growing consumer awareness regarding benefits of bio-based personal care products is expected to have a positive influence on the market. The demand for biosurfactants in personal care is expected to reach 50.7 kilo tons by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 4.5% from 2014 to 2020.
• Europe was the largest regional market

The goal of this project was to make, and test four soaps, and two detergents. The purpose of making four different soaps and two detergents was needed in order to decide which one would be best for the environmental group to use in the future that would allow for the safest cleanup of an oil spill while not harming the animals or the environment in the process. It was necessary to test the impact of the four soaps and two detergents by analyzing their different properties based off of their specific characteristics and the wastewater left over from the vacuum filtration procedure. This procedure had to be undertaken in order to confirm which of the soaps and detergents synthesized is most environmentally suitable, and which one would result in the most minimal environmental damage as possible after clean up. Other test that were essential in determining the characteristic and properties of each individual soap and detergent included testing for lather ability, cleaning ability, and solubility. Each soap and detergent was tested for lather ability, solubility and clean- ability, by cleaning dirty lab glass wear by means of mixing a small amount of each soap and detergent in a beaker with water, and creating a lather by the use of a scrub brush. The individual results can be seen in Table 4. The greater the lather, more cleaning ability the soap or detergent was capable of. The test of lather ability was done first by using tap water. The soap will make more bubbles with the soft water than with the hard water, because it reacts with the calcium and magnesium salts to form 'scum', which is insoluble in water when mixed with hard water. This means there is less soap for making bubbles, or for cleaning. The tap water used to test the properties of the soap would most likely be considered hard water more than it would be considered soft which is why the conclusion of the least lather ability meant more cleaning ability. After the…

    Uses of Bioaugmentation

Bioaugmentation is used in several clean-up operations such as waste water management, cleaning and odour control, as well as surface cleanup and remediation. The first use of bioaugmentation, i.e. waste water management relies on certain microbes to degrade organic material, under controlled conditions. This is an example of a catabolic reaction, in order to treat waste water. The second example is cleaning and odour control of tiles, wood or concrete. The microorganisms penetrate the cracks in the above mentioned materials, using the grease/spills as a food source and removing them. Third, bioaugmentation is used in surface cleanup and remediations which involves cleaning materials such as asphalt, concrete, metal and other equipment that comes in contact with oil, gasoline and grease. This is useful in factories and industries to maintain a clean and safe work environment.…

In the early 1970s, bioceramics were employed as implants to perform singular, biologically inert roles. The limitations of synthetic materials like tissue replacement were highlighted with the increasing realisation which cells and tissues in the body perform many other critical regulatory and metabolic roles. The demands of bioceramics have changed from maintaining an physical function without evoke a host response to provide interaction with the host. This has been accompanied by increasing demands from medical devices to improve the quality of life. The most importantly is nanobioceramics potentially can be used as body interactive materials that help human body to heal or promoting regeneration of tissues and restoring physiological function[2].…

Microbeads has contributed to a greater increase in plastic pollution, hurting the environment. Microbeads are the smaller plastics particles that can be found in our personal care products such as face soap, body washes, toothpaste, exfoliators, and other cleansing products. These microplastics are smaller that a grain of sand raging in size from one millimeter to five millimeters. Manufacturers used this bits of plastic with an excuse or intentional to sell more scrubbing power, because they are cheaper than the natural exfoliators and by the way posing a threat to the environment. This Forbes article by Carmen Drahl explains why President Obama has signed into law the Microbead-Free Waters Act of…

Quaternary ammonium compounds, QAC, are ingredients found in household products such as fabric softeners, detergents, disinfectants, and hair products that consist of dialkyldimethylammonium compounds (DADMC), benzylalkyldimethylammonium compounds (BAC) and alkyltrimethylammonium compounds (ATMAC) (Li and Brownawell 2010). While trying to find the reason why these rivers keep getting contaminated, Brownawell found out that the wastewater areas found in surficial sediments around the Hudson River contained Quaternary Ammonium Compounds. High Concentrations of the Quaternary Ammonium Compounds are mostly found in muddy and sediment areas allowing contaminated sewages to continuously occur in urban estuary sediments (Li and Brownawell 2010). Many Quaternary Ammonium Compounds have a substance called antimicrobial, and it basically kills the growth of bacteria’s and fungi’s, and a plethora are used as disinfectants (Pritchard 1967). BACs and other Quaternary Ammonium Compounds are infecting the wastewater, which is also affecting the drinking waters. Scientist hypothesized that if they used super hydrophobic DTDMAC, it will help to decontaminate the sewage-affected sediment. In order to prove their hypothesis, scientists measured findings collected in sewage sludge in Europe, Austrian rivers, and Metropolitan regions; these findings were very high levels of Quaternary Ammonium Compounds. Sediment samples were collected to compare Quaternary Ammonium Compounds of organic contaminants measured in the same samples. The sediments removed from sewage sources were used to support the hypothesis made by the scientists (Li and Brownawell 2010).…

Nanotechnology presents potential opportunities to create better materials and products. Already, nanomaterial-containing products are available in U.S. markets including coatings, computers, clothing, cosmetics, sports equipment and medical devices. A survey by EmTech Research of companies working in the field of nanotechnology has identified approximately 80 consumer products, and over 600 raw materials, intermediate components and industrial equipment items that are used by manufacturers (Small Times Media, 2005). A second survey by the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars lists over 300 consumer products (http://www.nanotechproject.org/index.php?id=44 or http://www.nanotechproject.org/consumerproducts). Our economy will be increasingly affected by nanotechnology as more products containing nanomaterials move from research and development into production and commerce.…
