Glenn Hughes and Life Event
Life Event 1: Accident

In 2005 I was in a major car accident. I was a passenger in five car pileup, on I4 going from Orlando to Daytona Beach, where I was living. I broke thirty bones. i was in the hospital for two months, before returning home to my family, in Miami. I learned something very important in this, I learned to look at life from another's perspective. My remember one day in particular as I was crying to my older sister, about my life, i realized that she also cried, at the stress of her life. I learned that everyone has their issues, no matter what they be. This was significant because I learned to stop being so self-centered and to try to see others much different perspectives in life.
This experienced freed me in many ways. I learned that life is short.
I am very aware of my mortality now, and how there is much in life that we have no control over. This experience taught me in many ways the importance of family, and it taught me how to be less independent and rely on my family. This was a hard concept for me at first, because I have always been very independent.

Life Event 2: Israel

Later on in 2005 I went to Israel, which was supposed to be a month long trip. My family had been through a lot, and my mother's death really tore my family apart. I ended up living in Israel for over a year. This event was significant because I went there an angry girl, and left a healed woman.
I found my faith in God again, and I let him take away that pain my parents had left in me. I learned a lot living there, about the world and about love.
One of the things that I loved about Israel is the lack of material concern for things. I grew up in a very materialistic home, and I don't think most of us are even aware of how much of an emphasis our culture puts on stuff. This event was significant to me because it shaped my personality in so many ways. After living in Israel, even to this day, I have such a strong faith in my religion. I

Call it growing up or call it maturing, but after this happened my world changed because I realized that my parents, especially my father, struggled everyday to give me and my older brother what we had and that I should be beyond proud of them. My dad being the only working adult in our household has always had the whole responsibility of taking care of us, going and working in terrible conditions and terrible jobs to be able to give us what we had. He never for one moment in his life had it easy. He along with his younger brother and sister were abandoned in his home country, El Salvador, by his mother and father, which led him to have to grow up early and become an adult and parent to his sibling. This lead them to travel to America in search of an opportunity for a better life and they indeed found a home here, but good things can not always last forever. My father lost his younger brother and this drove him to bury himself in his work, which killed me to see my father, the person I most loved in this world, slowly lose himself.…

Four years ago, on a normal Thursday school night, I was sitting in my room doing my homework and my aunt came bursting into the door saying my brother was kidnapped. I did not want to believe what I heard and kept asking her to repeat herself. I ran outside of the house and screamed because my emotional pain became so hard that my stomach felt like it was tied in strong ropes and I was ripping apart, I was devastated because my only brother was gone, I didn’t know if I would ever see him again, I did not even have a chance to say goodbye. I was angry at myself, at the people that took him. Life seemed impossible to live during the days he was kidnapped. My family finally came up with the ransom the kidnapers were asking for and through a miracle…

After this experience I now found myself wanting to thrive, and wanting to become very successful. I am not going to do this for myself, but for my family especially for my parents. I want to pay my parents back for the things that they have done for me. I want to become a person who will not only exceed them, but also the person who will provide them a good life. I have also learned to understand from this experience that hardships can be overcome by doing our best for others. The things that frightened me most the language and school have become my stepping-stones to my success.
