Giraffes Have Long Necks
Giraffes’ long necks are a very distinct feature and unique to itself, but how did giraffes get this adaptation? One possible way comes from Theory 1 which states that the ancestors of giraffes had tried to stretch their necks to get food higher up such as leaves from trees due to competition on the ground. This made their necks gradually longer. The effect can be found in the paragraph about Theory 1 which says,”As their necks became longer, they were able to reach more food. Those ancestral giraffes survived to reproduce, while the giraffes that had not stretched their necks died.” This means the ancestral giraffes with the stretched long necks created offspring which would make the offsprings have longer necks. This would keep repeating for generations and generations. This keeps continuing until giraffes had these long necks to get a stable food supply without …show more content…
One important detail about genes is that they can be inherited from parent to offspring, so which theory uses inheritance to make the offsprings have long necks? Theory 1 can’t use inheritance to carry the long necks of the ancestral giraffes to the offspring. This is because as said in the paragraph about Theory 1,” Some giraffes kept trying to stretch their necks to reach leaves higher in the trees. As they stretched, their necks became longer.” This means that the long necks weren’t made by genes directly which means the long necks can’t be inherited as the feature wasn’t made from genetics. The stretched necks would only be on that ancestral giraffe. Theory 2 however, uses inheritance to carry the long necks of the ancestral giraffes to the offspring. The reason is that as said in the paragraph about Theory 2,” Some of the ancestral giraffes naturally had slightly longer necks than others.” This occurred naturally which means it was created with genes.
