Both of the characters are static characters. From the beginning to the end, their love was what kept this whole story together. Della, a lady with silky long hair, gave up her prized possession in the name of love. Jim, a hardworking man, gave up his family heirloom in the name of love. They tried all they could just so they could see the other person happy. The reader once finished reading the story, would have a warm tingling feeling inside and a smile, knowing the true benefits of compassion and love. Jim and Della could have been wealthy and bought each other lavish gifts, but that wouldn't mean anything. With them being poor, their sacrifices have a deeper meaning. Minor details also greatly impacted the story. Della often repeated the value of the money she had, $1.87, numerous times to show how little it was and to create an emphasis on how hard it would be to find a gift. In the story it stated, “She put on her old brown coat. With the bright light still in her eyes, she moved quickly out the door and down to the street.” Words such as “old” shows the severity of their financial crisis and “quickly” to show the great urgency she had to get Jim a gift. Little words and figurative language here and there really spice up and emulsify the plot of the story. The only reason compassion is shown in the story is of how they were poor and that they each sold…

Fifteen dollars has been enough to bring Mrs. Sommers back to her past and to give her an evanescent. The role of the family was not going out and spending money on yourself, they expected everything from their mother. Starting from cleaning their clothes, cleaning the house, anything a maid would do today. It wasn’t fair at all towards the mothers back in the day, but that’s how society was. Not a thing could’ve changed how society was back then because nobody ever looked at how the wife/mother feels because they didn’t care enough. There were moments throughout the story she had thought about her kids when she was buying herself gloves and hats but she didn’t hesitate to treat herself because it had been so long and she felt like she deserved it after to do so much for her family. (“On Impulse however this long-deprived woman spends all the money on herself, striving for one day at the least self-indulgence, one day that might hint of some personal autonomy in a pinched and narrowed existence” Kate Chopin: “A Pair of Silk Stockings”; The Marital Burden and the Lure of Consumerism Page 1)…

The main character in The Necklace’s, and the main character in The Gift of the Magi’s, personalities differ from one another vastly. In The Necklace, the main character Mathilde Loisel is an ungrateful middle class woman who seeks riches and admiration. Alternatively, the main character in The Gift of the Magi, Della Young, is compassionate and works very hard to buy her husband a present, and ultimately, selling the one thing that was more precious to her than anything else, her hair. Mathilde is selfish, and when her friend, Madame Foreister is sympathetic enough to let her borrow her jewelry, Mathilde asks rudely, “Haven’t you anything else?” (Maupassant, ¶39). In contrast, Della is very appreciative when she receives a hairpin, and is very unselfish when giving away her hair to buy a present for her husband. Mathilde and Della are also both remotely poor. In the beginning of The Necklace, Mathilde and her husband were pretty well off, not too rich, and very simple. But at the end of the story, they are dirt poor, having spent 10 years paying debts. On the other hand, Della started out fairly poor, only being able to gather $1.87 for a Christmas present, but enjoyed life all the same.…
