TITLES Select one title.

Essay Title 1

According to media scholars (such as Sparks, McNair, Curran) why is the UK national press like it is, and does it provide a good news service for UK citizens? Do you agree with Sparks that the nature of the UK press is a problem for our democracy?

Essay Title 2

Explain why regulation of UK broadcasting is important.
A. What is Ofcom and what does it do? Why do you think regulation of all UK broadcasting (commercial sector and the BBC) matters?
B. In what ways does the BBC regulate itself? Why is this self-regulation role important and how does this role compare with the responsibilities of Ofcom?

Essay Title 3

What is public service broadcasting?
A. With reference to appropriate scholarship (such as Curran and Seaton, and others) explain what is meant by the term 'public service broadcasting'.
B. Carefully explain the difference between public service broadcasting and publicly funded broadcasting. In the UK context, why it this a significant distinction?

Essay Title 4

According to media scholars (such as Curran, Sparks, Hodkinson, Branston & Stafford) what are the advantages and disadvantages of Free Market and Public Service media systems? How do you think the media should be owned and regulated?
