Georgia O Keeeffe Analysis
The first internationally acclaimed American woman artist, Georgia O’keeffe, rose to eminence for her stylized interpretation of New York cityscapes, New Mexico landscapes, and imposing paintings of flowers in bloom. Born on November 15, 1887, Georgia Totto O'Keeffe was the first daughter and second child of seven children of dairy farm parents in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She and her sister, Ida O’keeffe, were instructed how to draw from a grammar school teacher. In addition to her drawing lessons, O'Keeffe was educated in painting by a local watercolorist. Shelton with Sunspots portrays a photographic glare that is caused by not having a lens hood on the camera. Which results a painting in which the skyscraper appears to be connected with the divine. Although O'Keeffe's paintings of skyscrapers might appear simplistic, their power lies in the perspective O'Keeffe employs in her technique (Peters). Her paintings often times used the vantage point of being on the ground and looking up which conveys a sense of wonder an individual might experience while stretching out one's neck to look up at the awe-inspiring skyscraper. She was unique in her approach and interpretation of nature’s shades and shapes. This artist possessed an inimitable view of things. In her early work, she displayed her subject matter in distinguishing colors and forms, while later on, her paintings adopted a modern and abstract look. O’keeffe also used soft colored circles to represent sunspots on the building, which was the Shelton Hotel in Manhattan. The painting reminded me of the time I was in New York; it gave me a sense of nostalgia, reminding me of the time I was craning my neck looking at the beautiful
