George Washington's Lesson: The Battle Of Long Island

Commander in Chief, George Washington, knew something needed to be done. The British had handed the Americans a number of defeats. They lost New York to the British at the Battle of Long Island in the summer, so the American morale was low and many deserted the army. Some even wondered if the bounty for enlisting in the army was worth it. They were hungry, cold, weak, and many were sick. They were finding it hard to continue the battle.
‘We are in desperate need of supplies!” ordered George Washington. “I have a plan. And if it works, we will be able to continue our fight!”
“But from where? How?” asked a young soldier.

“ Keep your hopes up. I’m sure an army with men like us can surely survive this weather. Just be confident.”
“ We certainly will.” responded Private Tom.
A short while later, they finally reached the Delaware River. Right then and there, they knew it was going to be tough cross.
“ Oh no! There’s icebergs in the river! This does seem a little risky, doesn’t it Colonel?” asked Private Tom.
“ Nothing can stop us now! I believe that we can do it. Now who’s with me?!” yelled Colonel Washington.
The whole army cheered after the colonel’s words and started to get the boats ready. It was a tough journey, and two men died, but they finally made it across the river.
“ Thank god we made it through that horror.” Private John said, relieved.
“ Although we made it, a couple of our supplies did get wet along the way, including our gunpowder. We also came a little bit later as planned” admitted Private Tom.
“ That’s alright private, we will have to adjust with the limited supplies we have. Just another reminder to use them wisely.” replied Colonel Washington.

The soldiers scrambled to their places, eager to win the battle.The soldiers sloppily poured in the gunpowder in their guns, loaded them, and began to shoot at the barracks of the Hessians. BANG! Bodies were thrown to the ground, surrounded by blood, one of which was Col. Johann Rall of the Hessians. The Hessians tried to fight back, but failed to. In the end, it was the underdog Patriots who won.
“ Great job team! We have defeated the Hessians and got back Trenton. Let us bring more victories for America!” exclaimed Colonel Washington.
“ Sir if you please, I have the total of the casualties!” thundered a man with quite long hair.
“ Yes, I grant you permission to say it outloud” replied Colonel Washington.
