To compare heredity effect on behavior you have to start with the old question is it nature or nurture? The importance of nature versus nature is simply your belief of the way a person was raised determines their behavior, like a child being taught to hate and when they reach maturity they are more likely to hate (nurture), or the flipside a person who was raised to hate but when they get old enough to make their own decision on hate they decide it is not right (nature). What we know is a person height, weight, eye color, etc. is all genetically inherited. What we do not know is if a person behavior is based on their upbringing or their instincts.…

Genetics affect who you will grow to be in many ways. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the language of life that is within every living thing, genetic instructions that form what we will become. There is still much of the language that scientists don’t understand, but after extensive research scientists have found that certain gene codes actually relate to increased chances of developing a cancer or disease. We only have to look at family medical histories to know that is true, some diseases are clearly more common in families than in unrelated people. But whether a genetic predisposition actually makes a person ill depends on the interaction between genes and the environment. For example you are much more likely to develop lung cancer within your lifetime if your parents/grandparents have had it; it is likely that you have been handed down a gene that increases your risk of developing it. However if you smoke regularly and do little exercise then you are putting yourself at an increased risk of developing it sooner and more rapidly. Genetics also affect our appearances, body shape and how tall we can become. Half our chromosomes come from our mother and the other from our father. Our appearances tend to more or less a mix of our mother and fathers however some of our attributes of appearance may be similar to our grandparents. As genes can sometimes seemingly ‘miss a generation’ but the genes are still passed down just not aesthetically visible. Our genes also affect the timing of when puberty occurs, but environmental factors such as nutrition also have an effect.…

Sadly, this is probably what the world’s new generation of children would be like if some kids are designed by their parents and others are not. The founder of genetics, Gregor Mendel, showed that parents passed genes to offspring. Genes code for traits. For example, Mendel demonstrated that a single gene codes for the color green in peas. A single gene also codes for the color yellow in peas. The geneticists who followed Mendel had no difficulty extrapolating his findings to the rest of life. Of particular interest was the role of heredity in humans. In a casual way, people had long appreciated the importance of heredity, noting for example that a child looked strikingly like his or her mother. Geneticists sought to formalize observations of this kind, tracing, for example, the transmission of the gene for brown eyes through several generations of a family. In the course of this work it was natural for geneticists to wonder whether intelligence and traits of character were inherited with the lawlike regularity that Mendel had observed with simple traits in…

Genetics plays a vital role in the development of the human life as some disorders cannot be prevented as they are genetically predisposed, genetics determine your eye colour the same way it will develop the brains efficiency. Take Down syndrome for example if there is three copies of chromosomes 21 are present. This genetic deficiency is a fact as it occurs throughout all races no matter what their surrounding environment is like. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas, liver and intestines. Cystic Fibrosis is caused by a mutation in the gene for protein. Cystic Fibrosis is common in a lot of race and gender and is not determined by the surrounding environment as it is caused when the neither of the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) gene is working as a result of mutation and therefore inheritance. Sickle cell anaemia is a genetic blood disorder, it is more common in people with a sub tropical background, is called a disease as it is inherited abnormality causes pathological condition which can lead to death. When a person inherits only one gene for the condition (from either their mother or father) they are said to have ‘sickle-cell trait’. This trait may result in problems if the person becomes short of oxygen.…

At the very beginning of my eighth grade science class, while discussing the topic of genes, my teacher, Mr. Jibon Saha explained why we look similar to our parents and how genes flow from generation to generation. That day, for the first time, I found the real answer to my question “why do I look like my father?”. He also described the great phenomena of environments, how environments help us by providing all needs. All of his story and discussion sparked new thought and I found a real desire to do study Biological Science and gain more knowledge in this field.…
