Gene's Evil In 'A Separate Peace'
Gene is full of the evil that shows up in every story. Gene, the main character in the Separate Peace, thought his best friend to be his enemy. He also broke his so called enemy's legs and tried to convince himself it had been an accident. Finny was then sadly eventually killed by Gene's decisions and actions. Gene is inherently evil because he thought Finny to be his enemy, he broke Finny's leg, and ultimately killed him. Should one think that their best friend is their enemy? Finny was the perfect friend by always including Gene in things, always having fun, and just a person that one would always want to be around. One needs a lot of self confidence to be best friends with the "perfect friend" and Gene didn't have a lot of that. "Jealousy

It all started out with a bunch of boys that held "court" to find out the truth about Finny breaking his leg. After hear some of the things that were being said and hearing how Gene is the cause of his leg breaking Finny ran, not wanting to accept the evil in his friend. "The excellent exterior acoustics recorded his rushing steps and the quick rapping of his cane along the corridor and on the first steps of the marble stairway. Then these separate sounds collided into the general tumult of his body falling clumsily down the white marble stairs. (Knowls 97)." Finny then died because of his leg breaking once again (bone marrow went through his blood stream and stopped his heart) and the truth of his best friend betraying him. Gene killed Finny, broke his friend's leg, and thought his friend to be his enemy. Eveyone dies but to die at the hand of a friend is more horrible than anything. To be filled with hatred and paranoia to break a best friend's leg is pure evil. True friends are not enemies but jealousy can make anyone an enemy. Separate Peace is a book that is filled with friendship and life lessons but it is also filled with evilness that will take over a person so that one can't even recognize
