Generation Y
The Future Generation Growing up, I never realized how lucky I was to be blessed with having shelter, food and clothes to wear. I always took things for granted and always expected things to go my way and to receive everything that I wanted, instead of working hard towards my goal myself. Looking back, I was only doing what every typical child in our generation was doing. Our generation is considered the Generation Y, The Millennial, Generation Next, or Generation me. We are the generation of people born during the 1980s and early 1990s. Our generation is growing and increasing in size every single day. Our generation’s population size has reached the point where we’re the largest part of the entire human population. Unlike other generations before us like our parents the Baby Boomers, we the Millennial Generation have extremely outstanding qualities and a great environment filled with excess amount of opportunities but we take it for granted without realizing it. We as the future generation are extremely lucky to be living in this era despite the many hard obstacles that we are currently struggling through. We are capable of making the world a better place through community service or even starting movements to end a cause. But even with these given opportunities within our grasp, our generation can’t fully benefit or even acknowledge them to the greatest of our abilities because of our egotistic nature, materialism and social media addiction.
Our generation is filled with many egotistic youth who only care about themselves. It’s hard for our generation to not have this sense that we are special and should have the center of attention at all times. In Larry Gordon and Louis Sahagun’s essay “Gen Y’s Ego Trip Takes a Bad Turn”, Jean Twenge a San Diego State associated professor and lead author states “Some of the increase in narcissistic attitudes was probably caused by the self-esteem programs that many elementary schools adopted 20 years ago, the study

On account of my own experiences (Yes, I know personal experience doesn’t trump truths) within the Millennial generation. This generation sings a song that is of a different tune than the one “The Newest Greatest Generation” suggests. When reflecting on where my peers are and are headed, I see a generation that is filled with persons of high character, creativity, and open mindedness. Not to say this isn’t a generation without flaws, as we have many, but unlike Stein, I wouldn’t hesitate to label this generation as altruistic, full of fervor, and philanthropy. As a reader it was difficult for me to believe the “truths” of this article, and easy for me to accept this as another case of social ageism, the “us vs them”…

Unlike some of us millennials who enjoy being antisocial, Johanna enjoys others company and conversing with people, and she breaks most of the stereotypes millennials are known for. Johanna Tavarez is driven because she pushes herself greatly through obstacles in her life and goes against the stereotypes. Johanna’s quote explains the millennial generation works hard when moved by a cause, unlike the media and older generations like to show. In “deep and personal with Hanna, “Johanna Tavarez states, “I love that we get what we fight for. I love the effort that is put in when we feel strongly about anything. We send clear, vibrant, creative messages to the world.” During our interview Johanna shows deep concern for how the millennials are viewed. She believes it is important to show not all millennials are lazy and negative people. There are plenty of hard working individuals, like herself in this generation. The quote stated above has a connection with the thesis of our article, because it explains why Johanna does not feel as a part of the millennial generation because she is hard working. Many like to perceive the millennials generation as the worst people to have walked the earth,…

In the video “Millennials: Why are They the Worst?” by Kelly Williams Brown, she persuades an audience of highly educated people about why millennials are not as bad as people think. Usually when thinking of a millennial a picture of someone who is always on their phone or social media pops up, but just because we have these advances in technology does not mean we are entitled or all about ourselves. Brown is effective in presenting that we are not these things to the intended audience, because she can back up her claims with excerpts or her own knowledge on the topic. Although what Brown talks about in this video may be controversial between generations, Brown is also effective in saying that all millennials are the same, whether we like to…

My generation consists of those born between 1980 and 1994. My generation has been labeled a lot of things. We've been called Generation Y, Generation ME, Millennial’s, the Internet Generation, and even Generation Einstein. We have also been labeled the laziest generation ever. We are a cohort of kids that because of instant messaging, Myspace and Facebook, we seek instant gratification. We are impatient and unwilling to work hard, according to many, hence the name, Generation ME. All this “technology” generation wants is instant gratification. Perhaps the most outstanding detail that distinguishes this generation- from even those born just a couple of years earlier- is their level of media…

In America, it is your right to live the life you always wanted. This is the “American Dream.” As the years go by, this dream is fading away, causing millennials to have a major struggle as they mature as adults in the “greatest country in the world.” The concept of this “American Dream” is under a great deal of scrutiny as our economy drops yearly. It’s beginning to become harder to isolate yourself from the pack in this country, making it more competitive for the millennials. Statistics show children are more than likely going to have a better life than their parents. This shows the drive and positivity our country contains. The next portion of this essay will observe different perceptions of moving up socioeconomic classes. Zachary Freeman’s…

Millennials are being harmed by their massive exposure to social media and technology. Currently, millennials are known as being tech-dependent, while that came at a cost of not truly appreciating everything that life has to offer. This generation would rather be on social media, playing video games, browsing the internet, or watching TV than actually experiencing things and being productive. This overuse results in children being entitled, empowered, and not experiencing real-life or the hard work that comes with it. The most efficient way to save the future generation is to mediate children’s use of technology devices growing up and encourage these children to grow up with more experiences that exclude technology. If a plan is set forth where…

A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a group of people, in other words known as a stereotype. Stereotype, the word that was going through my mind when the read the article “Generation Text: The Dark Digital Ages: 13 to 17”. The article written by Mark Bauerlein really had me thinking about how someone could perceive our generation in such a stereotypical way, which basically lumped all of us, with our unique and contrasting ideologies together. After reading Bauerlein’s article he makes our generation sound like kids and young adults who would do anything to acquire social acceptance from our peers. My emotional response to Bauerlein’s essay was upsetting. He sounds oblivious just in the sense that he merely categorizes all kids in the generation [our generation] in a stereotypical manner. Not only does he…

As the years go by, every generation has an idiosyncratic aspect to them that no other generation has before. This aspect, though, could either be positive or negative. The Baby Boomers (1946-1966) are characterized by the increase of births due to the end of World War I and World War II. Generation X is known for their independence, both a negative and positive factor. Finally, the Millennial Generation known for their assumption of technology; this is also both a positive and negative thing especially when it comes to the work force. Although some see Millennials as lazy due to their dependency on technology, it might be this dependency that makes the Millennials an unique and important member of the workforce due to their experience…

Communication is a big aspect of good nursing care. Good communication within team members is a big aspect of competent nursing care. Moore et al. describes a team building activity called “ask me.” This is an activity where the workers are put into groups, the group then asks questions about each other. The groups should have people from each different generation. Another team building activity that a nursing manager could do is comparing and contrast. This is when the workers are put into groups, with the group being mixed of generations. The group then brain storms the things they have in common. After that the group will brain storm what is unique about each person. This will help workers connect with and understand their coworkers. The…

The Millennials are very narcissistic due to the influence of Social Media. Joel Stein claimed that the narcissistic personality disorder is nearly three times higher for people in their twenties than people in their sixties or older. (Stein) Many more adolescents and adults in the Millennial generation are obsessed with their looks compared to the past generations because of Social Media. Social Media influenced many teenagers and adolescents to look up to celebrities on television or magazines. These teenagers and adolescents idolize their celebrities’ appearance so they try to imitate their appearance through fashion. These popular fashion trends in society include makeup, clothing, accessories and dresses. Adolescents even change their manner of behavior by speaking in urban vernacular. Teenagers today use an immense amount of time to take a shower, pick out an outfit, and check themselves out in front of the mirror to see if they look good. Especially girls who tend to do makeup which takes up even more time. There are also many more unnecessary desires that our generation does to try and perfect ourselves. Such desires include: tweezing eyebrows, maintaining clear skin, applying anti pimple cream, shaving, getting piercings and tattoos.…
