General Zaroff Character Traits
“The Most Dangerous game” by Richard Connell is about what seems to be the “Most Dangerous” game. The Most Dangerous Game is about a hunter named Rainsford. Rainsford falls off of a yacht and swims to an island called Shiptrap island. Shiptrap Island retrieved its name because it has a history of shipwrecks. General Zaroff, the owner of shoptrat island, welcomes him to his island and reveals that he is out to hunt Rainsford. Rainsford then defeats General Zaroff, and Rainsford lives in his mansion for an unknown amount of time. In TDMG, General Zaroff, besides for his mental state, has some pretty solid character traits.
General Zaroff’s first character trait is that he is complimentative. Hist first quote that proves this is “it is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter to my home.” This proves that he is complimentative because he welcomed him to his home and called him “The celebrated hunter”

The first quote to support this is “The general took from his pocket a gold cigarette case and offered his guest a long black cigarette with a silver tip; it was perfumed and gave off a smell like incense.” This proves he is a purist because he has pricey and high quality cigarettes and offered them to Rainsford. The second quote that proves this is “They were eating borsch, the rich, red soup with whipped cream so dear to Russian palates.” This proves that General Zaroff is a purist because they are eating a Russian delicacy. These two quotes prove that General Zaroff is a purist.

All six of these quotes give evidence of General Zaroff’s strong character traits. General Zaroff is generous, complementive, and a purist. General Zaroff is the antagonist in a fictional story written by Richard Connell. The protagonist of this short story is Rainsford. Rainsford is a hunter that is well known by other hunters because he is an author of popular hunting related

Immediately upon arriving at Zaroff’s chateau, he greets Ivan at the door by saying, “Don’t be alarmed. I’m no robber. I fell off a yacht. My name is Sanger Rainsford of New York City” (4). Since Rainsford is only looking to find help, he communicates with Ivan at the chateau to tell him that he is not from here and needs and would like a shelter to be in for the night. Even though the quotes state that Zaroff is an insane individual, he reassures Rainsford by telling him “Come,” [Rainsford] “We can talk later. Now you want clothes, food, rest. You shall have them. This a most restful spot” (4). Before bombarding Rainsford about his hunting “passion” Zaroff wanted to take good care of his guest while he was with him at his chateau on the island. Thus, Rainsford and Zaroff, two different characters are distinct from each other they share a common similarity…

Ultimately Zaroff can be characterized as Mysterious and cruel. First off one way Zaroff is mysterious is he already knows who Rainsford is without ever meeting each other before. Conelle page 44, “It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home… I am General Zaroff.” As you can see from this quote Zaroff is excited to meet Rainsford and immediately wants to get to know him better. My second reason is Zaroff acts strange in general around Rainsford. Conelle page 44 “The menacing look in his eyes did not change… a black uniform trimmed with gray astrakhan.” By this quote you can tell Rainsford is feeling uncertain and curious of him. You can also tell by his first reaction he is in some…

When Rainsford first meets Zaroff, Zaroff is courteous, hospitable, and honorable; he takes Rainsford in, gives him clothes, dinner, wine, and a place to stay. However throughout the course of the evening and dinner, Zaroff's character takes a drastic and radical darkening. "The weak [men] of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure," (Connell 799) says Zaroff over a glass of wine. "I am strong," (Connell 799) he continues to say. Zaroff hunted captured humans as a hobby and a sport! Rainsford is appalled at this, and Zaroff eventually continues to tell Rainsford of his intention to hunt him: "You'll find this game worth playing...Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" (Connell 801). Zaroff is so corrupt that he doesn't even understand what he is doing is wrong; he appears so nice on the outside, but his words and actions show his…

The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell, is an original nonfiction story about two hunters who take themselves into the Amazon to hunt down animals. Rainsford, one of the main hunters, ends up finding himself on a mysterious island after an accident occurs. Comparing to the film, the characters throughout the scenes differentiate in many ways. Although, the short story itself is entertaining. The changes such as the shipwreck, a love interest, and character development that the director produces a much more dramatic plot, placing the audience on the edge of their seats.…

The smile and the action of turning back caused Rainsford to believe that Zaroff knew where he was hiding. Also the action of letting the smoke to hit Rainsford nose, and looking up the tree but stopping right below where Rainsford is, suggests that Zaroff is playing with Rainsford. I agree with Rainsford because in the story it is said “ ...its pungent incense-like smoke floated up to Rainsford’s nostrils. Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree..... But the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay; a smile spread over his brown face.” This phrase gives a hint that Zaroff has sensed Rainsford’s existence.…

Richard Connell, the author of, "The Most Dangerous Game," depicts the theme, the most dangerous things are often well hidden; you never fully know how dangerous something is until it is right in your face and the hints are all out. Mr. Zaroff is the perfect example of how the most dangerous things are well hidden; in the article he says, "' I had to invent a new animal to hunt.'...'...It must have courage, cunning, and above all it must be able to reason.'" this shows that the most dangerous things are often well hidden because the animal he is talking about is humans; we are the the smartest species in the world. General Zaroff is hinting at the fact that he is hunting humans, Mr. Rainsford is not quite picking up on the hint…

As well as his appearance and occupation being unrefined, he had a less that pleasant personality. His did not get along with anyone but the alley’s self-proclaimed doctor, Booshy. The residents of Midaq Alley didn’t associate with him and he avoided them as well, “He had scarcely anything to do with the alley in which he dwelt. Zaita visited none of its people, nor did they visit him. Except, that is, for Dr. Booshy and the fathers who resorted to scaring their children with his image.” (Page 55) The alley residents avoided him due to his odor and filth and Zaita hated them equally. He often imagined methods of torture he could inflict on certain people, “He would imagine Jaada, the baker, as a target for dozens of hatchets striking at him again and leaving him a smashed heap.” (Page 56) Zaita was cruel…
