Gene therapy for disease (: Most of us, don’t think there are many cures for a lot of diseases and types of medical treatment we didn’t think was possible basically that is what gene therapy is in a nut shell; with its potential to eliminate or prevent diseases such as cystic fibrosis and hemophilia. It could even find a cure for AIDS, cancer, and heart disease. Gene therapy could be a medical life saver.
What is Gene therapy for disease? Genes are what make you , you. We get half of our genes from our Fathers, and the other half from our Mothers. Depending on what genes we get, it determines whether we have blue eyes or brown. If we have Brown hair or blonde hair. Dark skin or light skin. Genes also determine the amount of oxygen our blood carries and our IQ. A change in any one of these genes or a mutation, can result in a disease, physical disability, or shortened life span. What gene therapy hopes to do is completely eliminate inherited diseases or physical conditions. There are two forms for gene therapy: “Somatic” gene therapy which involves introducing a "good" gene into targeted cells to treat someone , but the down side to that is, it does not treat the patient's children, because these genes do not get passed along to their ongoing children. This is the more common form of gene therapy being done. The other type is, “Germline” gene therapy, this involves changing the genes in the egg or sperm cells, which in return then will pass any genetic changes to future generations. This type of therapy is not certain, it hasn’t had a lot of research, but so far gene therapy has moved from the conceptual stage to technology development and laboratory research to clinical translational trials for a variety of deadly diseases.
There are many risks and benefits. Gene therapy is done only through clinical trials, which can take years to complete. After new drugs or procedures are tested in laboratories, clinical trials are done with humans under strict

    The purpose of this lab was to demonstrate the use of gene therapy on diseases that are caused by a single gene defect. This procedure was demonstrated on two different strains of baker’s yeast, EAY 235 and EAY 431, which both contained mutations in the LEU2 and TRP1 genes. Neither of these strains will grow without a proper medium that would supply both of these essential amino acids. The EAY 431 strain of yeast also contained a Rad 52 deletion, which caused EAY 431 to be a deficient, recombinant strain. The LEU2 gene is a linear fragment that does not contain an Autonomous Replication Sequence, so it could not replicate on its own and needed to be integrated by homologous recombination. The TRP1 gene was a circular plasmid that contained an ARS, which allowed for it to act as an extra chromosome in the gene. The objective was to insert a “wild gene” and replace the defective genes and then grow them on a medium that does not contain TRP1 or LEU2 to prove that the genes had been cured.…

    CBS News airs a lot of news, like new findings in science and technology, entertainment, health, sports, and crime. The guest speaker was Eric Schadt who is the director of the Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. I will be using this source to explain my counter argument on how Gene Editing can be a good thing. Gene editing has evolved into switching out one mutated gene for a healthier gene, instead of how they used to just discard of an embryo altogether. This is revolutionary because we can cure the embryo before it is born of a laundry list of different diseases, with the only catch being that they need to be a single gene.     I feel that genome editing takes away the mystery of life and how everyone is unique because of their genomes and how they were naturally born.
