Gender Transgentral Bathroom Analysis
Today I got to experience a luxury not many students can. In class I was able to address critical issues to David McMurray, the vice-president of student affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University. After assembling a group of students, we discussed issues and how to solve them. One after another, my eyes were opened to problems I wasn’t even aware of. Accessibility to gender neutral bathrooms, feminine hygiene products, and proper mental health care services were issues we found to be pressing at Laurier. Group members affected by transphobia expressed the need for gender neutral bathrooms. Walking into a bathroom for a specific gender can be intimidating and dangerous for those who identify as transgender. To accommodate everyone, we believe that there should be gender neutral bathroom all around campus, so transgender individuals do not need to fear or be ashamed. As a group, we all had experienced a time where these products were not available to us when needed. We think Laurier needs to have feminine hygiene products accessible in every bathroom. In a sexist society, we know that if men menstruated, these products would be readily available for them everywhere. Women are made to feel ashamed of their bodies for the most natural process on earth. Discussing this issue as a group allowed me to further understand the sexist workings that surround us, yet we are all so accustomed to. In order to combat this issue, we believe Laurier needs to supply feminine hygiene products in every bathroom, so that women can feel comfortable and avoid the panic of not having a tampon or pad when they need it. We came up with the idea to have a basket in each bathroom that women can leave a pad or tampon in to help another women when she needs it. This needs to be a human right and we hope Laurier will set an example for other institutions to
