Author: Shobhna Jha ,Asst Prof, Sabar Institute of Management Dr B. K Nirmal, Prof, Sabar Institute of Management Gender equality refers to the equal valuing of the roles of women and men. It works to overcome the barriers of stereotypes and prejudices so that both sexes are able to equally contribute to and benefit from economic, social, cultural and political developments within society. Traditionally, there was a misconception about woman’s ability to balance her work and personal life but now in 21st century we see lot many women, who have committed themselves to the success and growth of different organizations. Women have made their presence felt in every area. The contribution of women as a leader is essential in every sector for success and prosperity of nations across the world. In spite of these changes at the workplace we find the organization mostly crowded by male candidates and women are very few in number struggling hard to survive in the organization. Be it nature or nurture, by the time most women and men make it to the workplace, their life experiences and expectations have been different in certain gender - based ways. Women are facing the problem like sexual harassment at workplace, sitting late at office balancing work and family life. This article discusses the problems faced and handled by females at the workplace, women empowerment in the corporate world. How presence of female employees in the organization affects the policies and organizational structure, various opportunities available for women in the current scenario. The article will also talk of some sectors like banking, IT, education sector where women are not only predominant in number but are also front – runners and emerging as leaders in respective fields. Increased worldwide competition and changing workforce demographics have forced organizations to recognize the need to change the organizational structure and norms so that a woman can very

    Sexism is still evidence in the workplace and in today’s society despite the battle that women are making for themselves. Sexism is a particular concern for society when considering its effect in the workplace. Sexism has always been a particular problem in the labor market especially with the formation of capitalism. In the last half of the 20th century this has been especially highlighted due to the increase of woman entering the labor market. This aroused the need for legislation for equal opportunity for both sex’s to be passed in 1975. It stated that discrimination of a person’s sex whether male or female was unlawful in employment, union membership, education, provision of goods, services, advertisements. Women hold a large percentage of the work force in companies but hardly any seems to pertain any of the power. There are many obstacles in the way of women in careers; women are in the quest for equal pay for both sexes. The pay should be the same for the same jobs, but many companies pay men a higher salary then women for the same job causing sex discrimination. Sex discrimination means that person gets treated in a less favorable manner because of their sex.…

    Even though there are gender anti-discrimination laws enforces to discourage such attitudes, we still find women are frequently subjected to subtle discrimination in most firm and they still favour the advancement of men. In terms of promotion, women are still neglected despite their confidence and high performance. Self-confidence is the key to the success of any organisational firms however HR professional are more mindful about how women will be disproportionately lack in the higher positions.     Feminist or gender inequality had been a social issue for several years now. It is an issue where the society believes that women are best suited for family or non-career employment path. However, as modernization takes place, there were series of studies conducted which shows how this social issue is now being accepted by the society which also shows changes in the society’s behavior. In a study conducted by Nicolson (2015), they found out that gender inequality issues during the twenty-first century are now taken less seriously than what was frequently portrayed in the late 1990’s. During the late 1990’s, women are excluded from making organizational goals and are neglected to held managerial positions (cited from Sealy,2013). Although men traditionally succeed over women when it comes to pay, status and positions, women of today are now entering what was known as preserve male positions such as managerial positions and politics.
