GENDER EQUALITY IS YOUR ISSUE TOO.

We have seen enough instances in our life of gender inequality to know that the problem of gender equality still prevails in our society. For those of you who believe that we live in the twenty freaking first century and have already gotten over that problem (come on, nowadays women are a country's prime minister) are in a great denial. I have many examples to prove the people who want to prove me wrong, wrong. But right now I just want to ask you people some fairly simple questions- why is it that after so much development when we have moved so ahead and left so much behind so we still look at a women wearing short clothes with demeaning eyes? Why is it that women are still getting blamed for being raped? Why is it that female actor as good as males are still paid less? Why is any female sport not as famous as male sport? Why are women still seen as what our ancestors say 'ghar ki laxmi' and not allowed to work? The ugly truth behind all these questions is that 'GENDER INEQUALITY' still prevails in our society. We can't put the blame of it on anybody else because it is a curse we all have ourselves put on our society, on this world.
Gender inequality is not a minor problem because with it arises many major problems such as feminisation of poverty, female homicide and female foeticide to name a few.
Many campaigns to stop gender inequality have started and come to an abrupt stop due to lack of any support but the recent campaign started by UN WOMEN is not one of them.
Due to its growing popularity and well we all should already be supporting it is one of the reasons I want to discuss it.
It’s been four months since UN WOMEN launched the

'HeForShe' campaign. For those of you who do not know what this campaign is all about I request you to please go to
YouTube and watch Emma Watson's really famous speech for launching the campaign. Yes I am talking about Emma
Watson, the Harry Potter girl. Well she is the UN WOMEN

    One of the key points to evaluate here is the argument that males biologically have an advantage in the majority of sports. In the vast number of cases this is true, however this should not be a reason why females are either discriminated against or feel pressurised to not participate in a sport. In a study done by McArdle, Katch & Katch in 1981, it was shown that among Western adults, men are around 50 percent stronger than women1. One thing that is important to point out here is that the average female has not been encouraged to participate in activities that would develop the growth and potential of muscles in the same way men have been encouraged to do. The stereotype that women should be slender and with little muscle does not aid this particular viewpoint on women’s sport. This leads on to the point of the history of female sport and the view on women’s roles in society. The earlier you go back in history, the more the viewpoint has existed that women are there to aid the husband in the house and bring up the children whilst he is out earning the money. This was very much the case and still is in some cultures, which inhibited and inhibits women from participating in sport because they simply do not have the time for it. As Spears (1978) said in his study, “Only the exceptional woman was involved in sport”2. I think it is fair to say however, that this viewpoint is quite clearly changing because participation in female sport is at an all time high at the moment. According to…

    Women today have the right to get a higher education if they want; they are in high ranking positions within our government and military.     Equality, as we know it today, has been formed and molded into an idea that is still changing.     It is not up for debate whether women are discriminated against in the workplace it is evident in census data; in 1998 women made 73 cents to the dollar paid to men. Even today, there is still a pay gap that exists between women and men. It is said that the organizations that are pro-equal pay, including some unions, support the idea that the government should set wages for all jobs. To the contrary, the organizations that are proponents of equal pay are not for job wages being set by the government-they wish to have the discrimination taken out of pay scales from within the company. Commonly, this pay gap is attributed to the fact that women in the United States are still expected to attend to familial obligations over work. Data shows that women do attend to family obligations, like having a child, caring for a sick family member, or caring for an elder; but they also do not give up on work. Yes, women often chose lower paying jobs in exchange for flexible hours and do spend a lower number of hours per week long-term at their jobs than their male counterparts. Because women are socialized to be the primary care givers they are kept at these lower paying jobs that are more flexible, the jobs allow them to care for their family yet still retain an income (possibly a second income for the household). Women’s changing roles in society has resulted in this workplace problem. Women are allowed and often encouraged to work but they are not rewarded or compensated at the same level, for their efforts, that men in the work force are. The pay gap would be narrowed if companies were more conducive to family schedules. Men and women would receive equal pay for the same job. Companies would benefit by retaining quality employees. Men and women need to start out making the same amount of money for the same job, companies need to offer women ample maternity leave, families need to be offered…
