Gender Equality In A Midsummer Night's Dream Essay
The topic of gender equality has been a controversial subject for centuries, dating back to even the beginning of time. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare writes about a group of lovers whose fates intertwine within each other. Debate is occurring that the women of the play act more foolishly than the men, as the men do not act as foolishly until they become intoxicated from a love spell. It is true that main female characters of the play, Hermia and Helena, do act foolish in the play. Men do not take women as seriously as they take themselves. Shakespeare has extracted evidence and infused it into his writing.

The one loyal lover, Hermia, is not signaling or asserting as smart in any way, even acting true in the most suggestive scenes played. While in a forest alone together, Lysander suggests she sleep with him. He continues persuasively until she proves her point of responding negatively: “Lysander riddles very prettily. Now much beshrew my pride if Hermia meant to say Lysander lied. But, gentle friend. For love and courtesy, lie off further human modesty. Such separation, as may well be said, Becomes a virtuous bachelor and a maid. So far be distant; and good night, my friend. Thy love ne’er alter till thy sweet life end!” (Shakespeare 55). Her claim is proven artfully and accurately, but Shakespeare puts it in a rather foolish light as she sleeps alone, inducing Robin to believe Lysander was the mentally abusive Athenian who did not love the woman who desired him most. The mood sets to a regretful event within the dramatic irony that Lysander has fallen in love with another as Hermia searches life and death for her to-be husband.
