Distance learning is a great way to get a degree and still stay in the comfort of your own home. It is easy to work into your hectic schedule because there is no set time that you have to be online and all you need is a basic knowledge of the internet. There are a few basic requirements, such as participating in threaded discussions and giving feedback to your fellow students. Threaded discussions take place thru what is known as asynchronous communication. Asynchronous communication is defined as a “Form of communication in which participants use technology to share communication, wherein each participates at a different place and time, and face-to-face interaction does not occur. Often refers to distance learning interactions, e-mail, etc.” These discussions are part of your participation grade, and are led by your instructor. You will also have weekly assignments to complete and post on the electronic forum for your teacher to review and grade. All of your assignments are on the University website and broken down into what you will be doing week by week. There are other great features to the online campus at University of Phoenix. You have access to the student library, student labs, workshops, and community forums all which are geared to help you succeed.

Distance Learning: Distance learning is in many ways self-directed learning. It requires a high level of responsibility, dedication, and self-discipline on the part of the students. In this course, you are responsible for your own work, your own progress, and your own grade. In order to succeed, you need to back up every piece of work you do on disk and make a hard copy. If you experience computer difficulties you are responsible for solving your own technical problems. Heavy internet use occurs during the evening hours of 8-10pm. You might consider logging on at other times if possible.…

Deciding to attend college online was a challenge by itself, so I am writing this survival guide to help me stay focused and remind myself that attending the University of Phoenix was the best decision that I ever made. This survival guide will allow me to look back on all the things that I have learned and how to apply them to my future classes. When you are taking courses online, there are many things that are different than being in an actual traditional school and certain things are required and/or necessary in order to be successful. Always have a plan of action to help keep you organized and in contact with the way you communicate and study. Be sure to have the right programs and website links on your computer, so that there won’t be any issues in the beginning. Understand that there are many things that are important to learn prior to taking online classes, but perhaps one of the most important things is having general internet skills. A plan of action for obtaining general internet skills is to simply get use to the internet by going on line and teaching yourself how to maneuver through it. The University of Phoenix provides many resources that will help guide you and one of the main ones is The University of Phoenix Library. The library provides many tools such as, Center for Writing Excellence (CWE) in which will help me write my papers in a proper manner and Plagiarism Checker in which will allow me to submit a paper to be checked to determine the amount of work that was my own versus other quotes and verbiage from a known source. It is recommended that you take time to scheme through the university library before starting a course, so that you will get familiar on where to go when you are searching for something.…

Being an online student is very flexible you can go to school on your own time and do your daily activities. The University of Phoenix’s classes that I am taking are all online. I start by accessing the Internet and logging into my ecampus student home page. There I am able to access my classes and see all my needed tools listed under each class. One of the main items you have at the University of Phoenix is your participation grade. You earn that grade by completing discussion questions and participating in discussions in the electronic forum. The electronic forum consists of the Main forum, the Chat room and the Course Materials forum. In those forums you will find all of your discussions. The discussion topics are all threaded discussions so you are able to follow each topic easily. One of the things I like about the electronic forum, is that you receive feedback from not only your professors, but all so your peers. This feedback is helpful for me to learn about the others views as well as mistakes or corrections I need to make. With my busy schedule the part of the University of Phoenix that best suits me is that your course work falls under the Asynchronous communication model. This way I am able to complete my course work at anytime during the week no matter what part of the world I am in. It gives me the flexibility to be able to attend college unlike the traditional Synchronous communication style of schooling.…

Amongst the blessings of technology in the modern age is the ability to receive an education hundreds or thousands of miles away from a classroom in a convenient and efficient manner. A vast majority of universities offer open distance learning for students all around the world which, on the surface, seems like a great opportunity to receive an education without the hassle of dealing with overflowing parking lots, rushing to classes, or fitting classes into the current work schedule. However, open distance classes might not be an ideal scenario for every interested person. What are the problems faced by open distance learners? They’re numerous enough to mull over before enrolling in an on-line program.…

There are always disadvantages to distance learning. Students that are not responsible and determined will have a hard time coping with a self paced, self-sufficient course. Students that actually want more reliable help with their class work would rather take a college course at an actual college rather than taking an online course. Personally, I would prefer to go to a real college rather than to take an online course as I am now. Sometimes, I get a little exhausted dealing with the military life that I procrastinate a lot. The student must be motivated and determined enough to complete each assignment, if not, then instead of gaining success in this method of study there will only be failure.…

Hey Gaby, I just started my class online with the University of Phoenix, let me tell you a little bit about it because I know you were interested in going back to school as well. Online courses are also known as distance learning, which means that you are earning your education via online. Instead of being in a traditional classroom setting and having that face to face contact with your teacher, distance learning is student centered instructional format that allows you to take courses without having to commit to a regular campus attendance. I personally enjoy doing distance learning; so far I have been able to easily concentrate on my work. The reason why I chose to do distance learning is because I really have a hard time attending regular face to face classes due to my work schedule, very much similar to the situation you are in Gaby. Just like your goals I want to continue to pursue my degree further and I didn’t want to stop attending school so I chose this avenue. Distance learning is a field where instructional systems are designed to deliver education to students who are not able to physically be in classroom site. In my opinion I think you would enjoy distance learning and you would be able to focus a lot easier. I really enjoy doing it because I love working with computers, some people say that they do not like it but most people that I have spoken to say that they really enjoy it as well. You should really try it I truly recommend it; I was scared at first because I was concerned about having questions that I would like to ask my teacher in person and via online you do not have that opportunity. The method used to communicate with your professor and or classmates is through forums and thread discussions. In these forums and threads you post your questions and responses to other posts as well, somewhat like a live chat room. This is referred to as asynchronous communication; because you are not receiving feedback onsite like you would in a regular face…
