Gear Accountability

Importance of Gear Accountability Gear accountability is very important in the Marine Corp. What would a Marine do in a combat environment if he left his Kevlar back at the rear? None of his brother’s would just happen to pull out an extra for him to borrow for the patrol. The same fundamentals apply to any other significant equipment items. In combat environments all the gear issued is issued for a reason, whether it is something as major as a rifle or something as small as a flashlight. It is even wise to sometimes bring unrequired gear like an e-tool just in case. I will try to explain why Marines need their gear, what they can do to prevent it, and what could happen if they lose/forget a piece of equipment. Marines obviously need to have their issued gear on them whenever they are instructed to have it. Just like we were told as recruits and again in SOI and even still in the fleet, everything is done for a reason and not just to fuck around with us. When a Marine loses a piece of equipment, not only is gear lost, but it can also blemish the Marines character. A junior Marine may be in great shape and great on his knowledge, but a few mistakes stand out much more than months of good behavior. Aside from the showing of a lack of responsibility, come time to turn in gear the Marine will be responsible to replace the item. This sometimes brings up another issue altogether, theft. The saying, “There’s one thief in the Marine Corp, and everyone else is just trying to get their stuff back”, applies here more than most places in the Service. One person losing a piece of equipment and then ‘tactically acquiring’ it from another Marine just creates a chain reaction of theft and expensive equipment purchases. Being responsible for gear translates to being responsible for the rest of your life as well. The average Marine is pretty competent with their gear accountability, there’s a

But when we talk about a Sgt. of Marines, things are more different. As a Sgt. of Marines not only you are in charge of the mission. You are responsible for the life and safety of all your Marines. You are the one that will be making difficult decision that may put your Marines in danger and may cost their lives or yours to save them. World War II in the Pacific has often been described as a "Sergeant's war." Small unit leaders carried an immense amount of responsibility for the overall battle. On most Pacific islands, there was little space for wide, sweeping maneuvers, or operational-level tactics. Typically, infantry Marines would team-up with tanks, engineers, and other attachments to hammer against the enemy's lines. Example of such dedication to the mission and to save life’s of their fellow Marines on the worst situation and sometimes even costing their lives. NCO's such as Sgt. Smith were in the forefront of combat, leading their Marines and setting the example under the toughest battlefield conditions. Able needed heavy fire support. Sgt Smith determined to find it. He moved out on foot and located three Sherman tanks. Leading them forward, he pointed out Japanese defenses for the tanks to engage. Under his fire direction, the Sherman’s destroyed numerous enemy positions at point blank range. Sgt. Smith continued to lead by example. Seeing wounded Marines trapped in front of the enemy's positions, he made several trips across exposed terrain to rescue four wounded comrades. He also organized litter teams to rescue other trapped Marines. All the while, he continued to direct the tanks in knocking out Japanese automatic weapons that were pouring fire into Able's positions. Is amazing how NCO take ownership of their mission and the…

Operational Security or OPSEC as we called it in the Marines, is something that is taken very seriously. Using his satellite phone to call home never happened; using the satellite phone in the middle of battle was an absolute joke. For one, the satellite phone was only used in emergency situations when radio communications were down. Using a satellite phone in the middle of battle to call home is usually not on the minds of Marines or Soldiers during battle. OPSEC is instilled over and over again when training as a Marine. Just because it is a satellite phone does not mean that the conversation is not being heard by the enemy. Giving away your position to call home was extremely risky. The use of a satellite phone in real combat was depicted exactly how it is when deployed in the movie Lone Survivor. This movie is about a team of Navy SEAL’s that were on a secret mission; only one of the SEAL’s ended up making it home alive. Very good movie about Navy SEAL hero, Marcus Lutrell.…

Many traditions are practiced in the Marine Corps that pass down the legacy from one generation to another. Some of these traditions are antiquated, a waste of time and irrelevant and some are valuable to our espirit de corps that builds comradery. Whichever the case those that do not get practiced enough that do build that comradery need to be practiced more and the traditions that are a waste of time should no longer be practiced. Change of command ceremonies is a tradition that should be eliminated so that the time, resources and personnel utilized to make these ceremonies happen can be distributed to other areas in order to improve training quality, unit cohesiveness and overall unit readiness.…

NCOs still follow the traditions of the past. When a lance corporal gets promoted to a corporal he gets his blood stripe, which is a tradition that make them feel closer to the Marine Corp. They also get the right to use the NCO sword. From so many young Marines, I’ve heard the desire to be able to use the sword. Also the NCO belt for the dress blues is something most Marines can’t wait to earn. To some people (non-marines) these things may seem insignificant but they take pride and feel more a part of our Corps because we know the history of these traditions.…

The value that I have personally taken to heart is discipline. I believe it is at the heart of everything that Marines do. Is an Irish Penant on a Marine's uniform going to cause the loss of a war? No. Is a failure on a field day inspection going to lose the Marine Corps a war? No. Is a Marine who runs on the weekends instead of sleeping in going to win the next war? Not likely but, perhaps. So, why do Marines do these things?…

Gear accountability is and will always be one of the key elements of the great success of not only the Marine Corps., but also every military organization in the United States. Being accountable means being in the right place at the right time, being in the proper duty uniform, being dependable and always arriving to work on time, appointments on time and most importantly doing the right thing at the right time and all the time. Not only is it important that Marines are on time, but also it is the responsibility of the Marine to always check there gear to make sure they have all the gear necessary for the completion of the missions at hand and the ones to come. If a Marine is always losing gear or has broken/unserviceable gear it will always have an impact on his or her performance in the line of duty.…

Share with them everything you know from stories to past experiences and mistakes made. What went well, what could have been better. These conversations will create file folders in your Marine’s brain housing groups, and hopefully they will have the confidence and the decisiveness to act and make a decision based off of the similar situation you shared with them. Preparing can be anything from story time to formal classes and practical applications. As long as the time isn’t wasted, and the effort is put forth at all times. You would really hate yourself if something happened to one of your marines that you thought you could have trained better. A lack of preparation and prior planning is a lack of leadership and discipline. When your preach something to your junior marines and expect them to do it and then you turn around and break your own rules your loosing everyone’s respect and trust. Were all human and we make mistakes but when it seems like your creating a pattern it becomes a problem. That’s why im writing this right now because my sergeant thinks im creating a pattern of tardiness. Which truth be told does have some truth to it. This sounds bad but the first time it happened I did it on purpose. I had no idea that we were holding formations now at 0700 because someone before me got in trouble. So I got there right on time. The second time was the morning of my surgery and I had taken off my watch to prevent it being stolen when I was unconscious, that day was just a huge brain fart. I had so much on my mind that I wasn’t paying attention, I thought I had left with enough time to get there a little early but I was wrong. I showed up on time again, which like I said earlier, if your not early your late. The third time I have absolutely no excuse for, it was a complete lack of preparation and discipline. I had a little too much to drink the night before and…

The importance of bringing all equipment to WLC is based solely on being accountable and as a leader that in tells a lot. If you you are not accountable as a leader, it hurts not only yourself, but the platoon, company or unit as a whole. Being accountable by Army standards, means being dependable-arriving to work and appointments on time, meeting deadlines, being in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing at the right time, IN THE RIGHT UNIFORM. The Army depends and runs on the discipline and the ability to be accountable for your actions and equipment. By forgetting my I.D card, I showed a lack of discipline. Regardless of personal problems, as a Soldier, it is my responsibility to insure that I uphold the standard. And with me striving to become a Noncommissioned Officer soon, this is unacceptable! If I can’t do the right thing, how can I make my Soldiers do it also. Without my equipment, I become a handicap for the rest of the class and my SGL, in this situation. By not having my I.D., I had to have my SGL, SSG H, walk me to my car, which took her away from the class and her job. It also removed SPC B, being that he had to be my battle buddy. If he had to take care of something, it wouldn’t have been able to because of my lack of responsibilty and accountability. Responsibilty and accountability are two important factors in being a successful NCO and…
