GCSE media studies coursework: A comparison of two local newspaper articles. This essay compares two newspaper articles taken from two different local newspapers in England
In this essay I will be comparing two articles taken from local newspapers in different areas. I will be looking at the techniques used in each article and their effectiveness. I will use this comparison to eventually decide which article is the more effective of the two.

The two headlines from the articles are quite different. 'Inches from tragedy' is a large, bold headline written in a way that makes you want to see what the headline is talking about, as it sounds serious. 'Firemen free bathroom tot' on the other hand is quite small for a headline and only really uses one emotive word, free, making it sound like the child was imprisoned, which is worse than what actually happened. I think that 'Inches from tragedy' is the more effective of the two headlines because it grabs the readers attention and uses a lot of emotive language in such a short space to make the reader carry on reading.

The language used in these articles is quite emotive in both cases. Both articles use exaggeration to tell you what they are trying to say. This is especially evident from quotes like "escaped death by inches" and "impossible for him to get out" as they are telling the truth about the events that occurred in each case, but are blatantly over-emotive to make the article more interesting. The firemen free bathroom tot article especially exagerrates the situation as it makes a toddler stuck in a bathroom sound like a major rescue attempt, whereas the other article Inches from tragedy features a very serious situation anyway. I think that both articles use emotive language very well, and that they are equally good at getting there point across through using language.

Both of the articles feature one long, main interview and one shorter interview towards the end of the article. The interviews have been included in each case to give the reader an account of the events in the article from one of the people involved. This is a good idea as people who were actually involved in the

That's compared to only 49 cloture votes from 1919 to 1970. After 1970, the number started to rise - perhaps prompting the 1975 rule change - until the number really jumped in the mid-2000s.…

The Neighborhood Newspaper reported a ravaging forest fire that lasted for five days. Due to an early start to a windy season, the fire consumes faster than the firefighters expected and it became harder to contain. The fire is destroying the land and causing irreversible damage. The city officials are reporting that citizens are not in direct danger and will notify the residents if the fire gets closer to the town. The second article [At times, your tone is too informal and conversational for academic writing. In Nora Ephron’s essay “The Boston Photographs,” she argues that readers should be provided with raw footage of what is really going on in the world around us on newspapers, even if the photographs are those of death of people. Nora Ephron writes about three very controversial pictures of a rescue attempt that failed in Boston which later on appeared on the news showing a 19 year old lady who died in the event. Ephron’s analysis of these pictures and public reaction in her essay show that she thinks, public reaction to the story would have been different under different circumstances. For instance, if the women survived people would have admired the pictures more. However if the child died too, the pictures would have received more complaints. Ephron believes many papers fail to show the truth, the reality that death is a main event in one’s life. For instance, a newspaper will publish a picture of cars involved in the car accident; however the crushed cars aren’t the significance of the story, but the people who died in the accident are. Ephron explains that this is how photojournalism can be more impacting than written news. According to Nora Ephron, these pictures should be published because they are a part of the story such as the story is itself. According to Nora, these pictures should be published in order to teach the readers a lesson. She tackles a very important argument in her essay. The question of if news organizations should publish graphic images of tragic incidents, or err on the side of caution and withhold them has been itself a dilemma.…

These three stories are- Rambo Healthcare needing donations, artist from Starlight having a gallery to sell their art, and the California College stabbing. The one that appeals to our love of scandal is the one about the police officer that was embezzling money from a youth group. There are two that are for our entertainment, the one about the record snowfall in Flagstaff and also the sound bite about Trump hosting SNL. Three are two that are intended to make us fearful for our safety. They are the story about ISIS planting a bomb in the Russian plane and the four people with Ohio ties being linked to Al-Qaida. I believe that the other stories are more just informative stories presented because they believe them to be news…

There is a major difference in how information is portrayed depending on the audience. Often times, when informing the population of terrible news the audience is looking for as many facts as the journalists will put out there. The miners and the families of the miners trapped in the Chilean copper mine collapse wanted to know everything that was going on and exactly what was going to be done in order to rectify the situation as well as how soon the workers could come home.…

The article is trying to reach out to the paramedics and to the people. When the people can not get help from the paramedics because they are too scared to come save someone life the people have to take matters into their own hands to save lives. Source two uses formal language so that it can fulfil its purpose to inform the audience. Therefore it uses facts and figures throughout the article to give the reader as much information as possible whilst still containing the sense of disaster e.g. “The tropical storm saw winds of up to 170mph” this is followed by, “that sent waves crashing…” This gives the fact more power and influence than if it was just in its own because it gives in more meaning and shows the consequences of the terrific winds. Source three, on the other hand, uses descriptive language because its purpose is to entertain as well as to inform. Therefore the writer uses informal language and involves the reader e.g. “a scrawny little street urchin like me”. The language used is very relaxed and the audience can relate to it because this is the type of language we use in everyday speech rather than Standard English.…

Article 1’s headline is more elaborated and uses much more animated lexical choices, which paint more of a picture in the readers mind. Article 2 is more simplified and straight to the point, summarising bluntly. A1 is in the present tense to give a more dramatic effect and add impact. A2’s lexical choice “evicted” is in a past tense as if to say, the decision has already been made. The rest of the sentence is in a future tense, emphasising the certainty of the eviction. A2 is in a passive voice drawing attention away from the doers. A1’s in an active voice, drawing focus to the positive actions.…

The pictures of life and death are a mixed bunch. As such are the images taken by Stanley Forman on July 22, 1975, of the mother and child falling when a fire escape broke. For Stanley to even be able to take these pictures with the technology that was in use at the time is a great feat. He took an enormous amount of criticism for his shots. Yes it is not the most pleasing image a reader would like to open up the morning paper too, and a lot of people had a hard time getting over that, but a person must look at the image as it was captured. With the disapproval aside if he had not taken these images not one morning reader would have actually know what went on the night before. It would have just been another name with no face that died in a fire. Since he was able to get those shots, in my view it actually helped put the story together by showing me how the tragic event unfolded. At least a person could be thankful that both the mother and child did not die. The one boy actually landed on his mother and lived. All of the people that questioned the photos cannot get passed their first impressions and look at the bigger picture, which is death happens and it is better to learn then go blind about it. Charles Seib, the former managing editor of the Washington Star writes “any editor who decided to print those pictures without giving at least a moment’s thought to what purpose they…

When reading a news story the best thing to do is can open mind. When a person is done reading a news story then the person can take the time to research and read more than one article about the subject. Reporters do not always have time to do hours or days of research to make sure that all the facts are stated correctly. Even when the time is put into doing the research the reader may interpret the article differently than the writer intended. The article that was published on the Killeen Daily Herald titled “Killeen may use grant for homeless shelter” leads readers to believe many things that are not true.…

Response: It is extremely sad and unfortunate that this chain of events occurred for the mother and child, but I feel their privacy wasn’t exposed negatively through these pictures. I understand why some readers would take offense to the pictures and complain, but I don’t think the editors were in the wrong in this situation; these images can help show and etch the images of danger in to people's minds so that they are more careful in their own lives.…
