In the first six months of my employment at The Connection I was a customer service representative in which I placed simple order requests and customer service issues. After six months of employment I became a coach and became responsible for 15 representatives. I had to monitor their calls, discipline them and set attainable goals with them. I was a coach for a year and then I became a trainer. In my time as a trainer I wrote new training material, updated old material, worked with current and potential clients on training and quality interests. After being a trainer for three years I became a client coordinator. As a client coordinator I was in charge of all representatives in the call center, worked with corporate on current and potential clients, monitored calls with the clients and took that information back to my representatives and set goals with them. The VRINE model is a tool used to show that competitors in an industry have different resources and capabilities, and that having to change them is difficult. A company’s capability to use its resources to create goods and services that are valuable to its consumers is linked to its value chain. The VRINE model is therefore used to assess the value chain, addressing the following: value, rarity, inimitability, non-substitutability, and exploitability as a basis for competitive advantage.…

The notion of the ‘value chain’ was first created by Michael Porter. The concept of having a value chain in any business is for it to develop a sustainable competitive advantage in the industry that it operates in. All organizations entail various activities that link together to create the value of the company, and together these activities form the organisation’s value chain. The Value chain of any industry always begins with the production of raw materials and ends when the final product is delivered to the consumer. The primary aim of the value chain framework is maximize value creation while minimizing the costs involved.…

Effective value chain as a competitive advantage can contribute significantly to the prosperity of a firm in the competitive arena, but it can cause dire situations if not operated properly (Guy, 2011). However, there are conflicts among companies as to how stakeholders think they gain competitive advantage. Porter (1996) suggests: A company can outperform rivals only if it can establish a difference that it can preserve. It must deliver greater value to customers or create comparable value at lower cost or do both. The arithmetic of superior profitability then follows: delivering greater value allows a company to charge higher average unit prices; greater efficiency results in lower average costs (Walters & Rainbird, 2007, p.25).…

Gaining a competitive advantage in today’s business world can be challenging for any organization. The success of an organization may be measured from its critical success factors. According to Blocher, Stout, & Cokins (2010), critical success factors (CSF), sometimes referred as value propositions, represents the critical process in an organization that delivers value to customers (p. 35). An executive committee responsible for developing the vision and mission statements of an organization must understand what value is. Value is the “worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor; utility or merit” (Camlek, 2010, p. 119). It is vital for an organization to have the ability to demonstrate value for their product or service. Camlek (2010) propose a value proposition:…

The unique skills and assets a company has to outperform its rivals are the sources of competitive advantage. The competitive advantage results from implementing a value creating strategy that is not implemented simultaneously by its competitors. The strategy attains sustainability if the competitors are unable to erode the strategic advantage the company has over them. The skills and resources underlying the company’s competitive advantage must sustain the duplication. The advantage should be such, that the duplication of product or service does not lead to the duplication of the efficiency of its operations and processes.…

A value chain is a chain of activities that a firm operating in a specific industry performs in order to deliver a valuable product or service for the market. The concept comes from business management and was first described and popularized by Michael Porter in his 1985 best-seller book. Porter suggested that activities within an organization add value to the service and products that the organization produces, and all these activities should be run at optimum level if the organization is to gain any real competitive advantage. If they are run efficiently the value obtained should exceed the costs of running them, and customers should return to the organization and transact freely and willingly. Michael Porter suggested that the organization should be split into primary activities and support activities.…
