The Value Chain in my Life
In order for a firm to create competitive advantage, it needs to create a set of activites that can deliver value to the specific product and services it offers to its customers. To start talking about my life as a “value chain”, I may need to compare it to a specific product”. This is going to take precedence both in my personal life and professional life.
I grew up in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, living most of my life on the country side with my Mom. My father was not in the picture, as he abandoned the house when I was very young. We lived with many limitations as my mother worked in the needle industry, earning minimum wage. She only went to first grade of grammar school.
Although financially we were very limited, my mother set the example being a hard working person and showing us many different values. I learned how to cook when I was nine years old, and took care of my grand father until he died, when I was only 13 years old.
As a teenager, my life turned out a little challenging. I quit school at 16. My very first job was at a tuna cannery, cleaning fish. I went through many rough times as getting up at 3:30 AM to get to work, worked standing for eight to nine hours a day, and smelling like tuna day and night took a toll on me.
However, I knew I wanted to do much more with my life and needed to find a way to grow and become a better person. During this period of time, I took all different opportunities offered such as filling administrative assistants on vacation, covering for the accounts payable clerks, reception area, human resources coordinator and even the president’s office. Interestingly enough all I learned how to manage a word processor this way, and also learned other skills that helped me get my first permanent job in an
