Gattaca Essay “For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home.” I am Vincent Freeman. I was born with a natural heart defect that made everyone expect me to live a short 30.2 years, and I am against human genetics. I was one of the last old-fashion born babies, natural born. Here in this sterile world, everyone seems to lack many things such as personality and individuality. You must have the strong will to “want” to accomplish whatever goal you set for yourself. For example, when I was playing the game of chicken and always lost in the beginning, this would be the obstacle that stood in front of me, but I overcame this by not saving any strokes to get back. I remember a time when I was saying, “You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.” Another example of how I overcame my obstacles is obvious. My biggest obstacle that I faced was when the company Gattaca only allowed “pure breeds,” if you will, to be co-workers and be able to go up to space, which was my dream. I surpassed that rule by impersonating my good friend Jerome. A quote he said to me once was, “I got the better end of the deal. I only lent you my body - you lent me your dream.” Jerome was immobilized from waist down when he was hit by the bus, which let me impersonate him and fulfilling my dreams of going to space. All my hard work is finally paying off. My big goal that I have been longing to achieve is in sight. Not many people get to live my dream, but it took a lot of planning and thought for me to sneak my way into Gattaca. My next point will be my final thought about human
