Parents should/ shouldn’t be allowed to choose the genetic make-up of their children, regardless of whether they want to eliminate genetic disorders or give them desirable characteristics.

Parents should not be allowed to genetically engineer their children because who would want to live in a world that everyone is the same in? There would never be any surprises because everything that genetically engineered patients do, they have already been ‘programmed’ to do before they were born. Finally, wouldn’t you want to leave your child’s looks, personality and identity to chance and for them to decide?
Firstly, parents shouldn’t be allowed to choose the genetic make-up of their children because who would want to live in a world where everyone is the same? If every child was genetically engineered, no one is going to have individual qualities that make them unique. Everyone is going to be attractive, fit and get A’s all round. Everyone will be comparing themselves to each other to see who has been genetically engineered better, for instance in the movie Gattaca, Irene gets Jerome (Vincent) tested to see if he was just as good as he is made out to be. She also wanted to find out if he was too good (genetically engineered) for her. The real Gerome even quoted to Vincent “my eyes are prettier”. In the film all the genetically engineered actors/actresses were dressed in grey or black suits and all looked very similar; to show they are all basically the same.
