-A review of the film.

From the day Vincent was born, he had always been concidered as highly flawed, and as an 'invalid'. His parents were planning on carrying on the family name with their first born child by calling Vincent, Anton, after his father, Antonio. However, once finding out that Vincent was prone to illness' such as neurological disorder, manic depression, attention deficit disorder, heart failure, and was expected to live for only 30.2 years, Vincent's father felt that he wasn't worthy of the family name, and decided to call him Vincent Anton instead. Mother and Father, Maria and Antonio had a second child, who Antonio felt was worthy of the family name, because unlike Vincent who was conceived the natural way, Anton was born through genetic engineering. As the two boys grew up, Anton was always considered superior to Vincent as he was always upstaging him at everything they did. Until one day, when the two boys played a game of chicken. Like usual, Anton was expecting Vincent to turn around and swim back to shore. However, no matter how much effort he put into trying to beat his brother, Anton and Vincent were neck and neck the whole swim. Anton was confused at how Vincent still had the energy to swim, and finally Anton wasn't able to go on any longer and he gave up. Passing out and starting to drown, Vincent saved his brother's life. For the first time in their lives, Vincent was better than Anton at something. Even though everybody believed that he wasn't good enough to acheive his goals, Vincent now believed that he could achieve anything that he set his mind to. Vincent decided to run away from home and he got a job as a janitor at Gattaca. This was his first glimpse of Gattaca, and he liked what he saw.

Vincent met Jerome (Aka Eugene), a depressed and alcoholic Gattaca valid who was hit by a car, which left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Nobody that was apart of the Gattaca institite knew

Most of the world’s population is valids who are born with the best traits and genes from their parents to basically make a perfect human. He has big dreams to travel into space and study it. Since he is born an invalid he is set for jobs that take basically no talent. He will do anything to achieve his dream. He enlists the help from a shady business man to help him succeed. Soon Vincent meets Jerome Morrow. Jerome is the perfect human. Except he is crippled from a car accident earlier in his life. Soon Vincent takes over Jerome’s identity using Jerome’s urine samples and blood packs to pass DNA tests. All is going as planned when the flight director of the space program is murdered a week before launch and the police investigate it possibly putting Vincent in jeopardy. Vincent goes through many hardships to finally being cleared from being the murderer, but the lead investigator is his brother, Anton, who recognizes his brother from samples found at crime scenes and he confronts him. Anton threatens to turn Vincent in for identity fraud but then they both agree to have a swimming competition. Anton always beat Vincent when they were younger, but this time Vincent wins and saves Anton. Now it is time for the shuttle to leave and Vincent is asked to give a urine DNA sample before he boards the craft. He doesn’t have a fake sample on him so he gives his “invalid” sample. He fails, but the doctor, who gave him all of the DNA test earlier in the movie, lets him pass anyway because his son is also handicapped. The movie then ends with Jerome killing himself and Vincent making it to space.…

By opening the movie Gattaca with quotations from Willard Gaylin and Ecclesiastes, director Andrew Niccol invites us to ponder the tension between science and religion with regard to the ethics of genetic engineering. In Gattaca genetics plays a prominent role in society and “discrimination [is] down to a science.” Niccol utilises flashback and voiceover to reveal Anton’s genetically engineered conception as Vincent, through voice over narration, reveals that Anton is promised a successful life due to his higher genetic quotient, “a son [Vincent’s] father deemed worthy of his name”. However, the last two swimming scenes that Niccol incorporates prove that “for the genetically superior, success is attainable but it is not guaranteed” as Vincent, an invalid, wins both swimming competitions and saves Anton both times. ‘God’s’ eye view camera shots and dialogue are used in the scene to make Anton seem menial as he loses. The camera shots are almost looking down on him and making him seem like the inferior one instead of his brother, and “every time [Anton] [tries] to pull away he [finds] [Vincent] right beside him.” Vincent’s determination is highlighted here as he pushes onwards whilst Anton gives up, forcing Vincent to save him. With his determination, Vincent is able to become an elite member of Gattaca despite his natural flaws, something Anton’s perfect genetics could not do. Jerome Morrow, a disabled former swimmer with genetics that are “second to none”, is represented as a victim to his DNA regardless of his ‘perfection’. “[Jerome]…

Exactly five seconds after he came into the world, Vincent Freeman was already considered to be a looser. His first genetic test revealed high probabilities of hyperactivity, sight troubles and serious heart diseases, a life expectancy of 30 years and 2 months and quite low intellectual faculties. At that time, the artificial insemination of test tube babies selected according to their genetic potential had become for many people "the natural way of making children". But Vincent's parents had preferred to let the other nature take its course. Of course they regretted it, and for their next child they went to see a geneticist. A perfect son has been born to them, a son who deserved to be called Anton, like his father. While Vincent was forced by his genetic code and the system to study at home, Anton was taller and better at anything than his elder brother. They used to play at "softy". The game consisted of swimming in the sea as far as possible and being the last to make an about-turn. Vincent was always the softy. But besides his weak health, he had a very strong will. His lifelong dream was to join Gattaca, probably the most prestigious company on earth whose activity is to explore galaxies, and go into space. To achieve his aim, he has not stopped studying during his whole adolescence, despite his father's discouragements. One day, he tells him that, with his health problems, the only opportunity that he could get to see the inside of a spaceship was to do the cleaning in it. In a way, it was true. Gattaca was certainly not about to invest money to train him whereas there were so many other applicants with a better profile. A bit later, the boys played at "softy" again. But that time, Vincent won. For him, it was the moment that made all the rest possible, the moment when he realized that everything was possible. And one night, he left home to never go back there.…
