Why does Fitzgerald contrast “hard rock” with “wet marshes”? What does he mean? Fitzgerald contrast “hard rock” with “wet marshes”…
Because Dorothy’s last name is Gale, and there were obvious points in the storyline of the Wizard of Oz where characters seem to be “blown off course”, a reader can understand that her last name was a metaphor. In the story, Miss Gulch threatens to put Toto to sleep because Toto chased her cat. Because of this motive, Dorothy casts Miss Gulch as the Wicked Witch of the West. The metaphor is used in the movie to show that Miss Gulch had thrown Dorothy onto a different path in the odyssey.…

Two nations arose from the ashes of the Third Reich, West Germany, the BDR, occupied by the Western members of the Allied powers, and East Germany, the GDR, occupied by the Soviet Union. As a result of conflicting ideals between East and West, the two Germany’s would develop separately until their eventual reunification at the end of the 20th century. It is an indisputable fact that German culture was forever changed as a result of the outcome of World War II, and the horrors perpetrated by Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. From the moment of surrender onwards, the culture of Germany would begin to be defined by the occupiers of Germany. In West Germany, this influence was spear-headed by American implementation of the Marshall Plan. While the Marshall…
Germany, until the late 19th century, was little more than a loose union of fragmented states. Dominating these states was Austria, the Habsburg’s largest stronghold. Unfortunately for Austria, its involvement in the Crimean War forced it out of the major spotlight in European power politics, making it a minor presence in the continent. This left a power vacuum in Germany which was quickly filled by Prussia, a military state with a history of strong rulers.…
Ludwig Van Beethoven was a German composer during the late 18th century to the early 19th century that through his rebellion, he opened a door to a new perspective in music. He has been regarded as one of the greatest composers of his time; but this couldn’t have been done if he hadn’t disobeyed the musical…
These differences can be broken up into three groups: geographic differences, economic differences and military differences. In terms of geography, while the United States was clearly a sovereign state with clearly defined borders, the “concept of Germany geographically” (pg. 54) was not clearly developed until 1871. This difference is compounded on by the economic differences between the two regions: by the mid-1860s, Prussia was a relative economic giant, “easily outrunning Austria.” (pg. 54) This economic model was desired by Bismarck, who hoped to impose “model” economic policy on the region. This is in…
The symphonies were played by a variety of string percussion and other instruments. For instance a piccolo two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in B flat and C, two bassoons, a contrabassoon, two horns in E flat and C, two trumpets, three trombones, a timpani and strings. Each musician played his or her instrument with unfailing concentration and poise. I noticed that the horn [layers played with such passion that any time they had a break in the music they had to empty their spit valves. Also the oboists wrinkled their foreheads any time they played their instruments, like they were working extremely hard.…
In “Rebel Music”, Daniel Felsenfeld delves into the inspirations he has drawn from music in his childhood. He tells of the struggles he experienced and the lack of inspiration from mandatory piano lessons from Ms. Shimizu. Although he dazzled her every time, he never felt connected to the music. Felsenfeld reminisced, “I was experiencing a personal drought, an acrid lack of culture of all kinds, especially music” (Felsenfeld 624). After he heard Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony while with a friend, he had an epiphany. He felt that in this moment, he heard music for the first time. From then on, he became obsessed and revolved his entire life around it. He then went on to become a composer despite his non-musical family background. Felsenfeld’s passion for music as a child encouraged him to be the person he is today, which is similar to the way gymnastics influenced my life. Gymnastics was a huge part of my life growing up, and I realize now that the sport allowed me to learn the valuable traits I use today. Being a gymnast taught me many things but especially how to be dedicated, how to be a team player and how to never give up.…

With that in mind, the German culture also highly values a strong sense of individualism and personal responsibility. Generally, the workers individual sense of duty and responsibility is very strong, contrasting with their family relationships, yet in America, these senses are strong signs of leadership and initiative. As a continued trend, my two cultures often interfere with each other. This does not mean that Mr. Quinn wanders into a music classroom and begins to critique our sound, although that does occur on occasion. Some days of the week i will have a chair test on the same day as a chapter test and must decide which exam i should commit more of my time to the nights before. As a matter of fact, my grades have suffered in the past due to this ongoing struggle between academic and symphonic…
