Adolescent’s Gang Involvement After investigating adolescents’ gang involvement, I come to recognize that adolescents’ gang involvement has become a major societal concern. Adolescent affiliation with gangs and delinquent behavior numbers has soared as of recently and may continue to due to numerous societal issues. In the article “The Origins of Black Crime,” author, William Cross, agrees when he states, “black delinquency rate steadily increased between 1920 till 1940, with greater crime involvement in the more run-down sections of the black community, where broken black families resided” (Cross, 2003, pg 7). By understanding that youth association with gangs are becoming a growing problem, the need for prevention, intervention, mentorship, therapeutic programs have also become an apparent reality. Author, Dishion, T. J and etl., agrees when they also state, “By linking the academic failure and peer rejection to early gang involvement, it will be useful to consider family centered intervention, after school prevention, gang intervention and any other positive program to focus on the school system” (pg 70). With adolescents gang involvement steady raising, the call for more early prevention programs maybe apparent and could help. But, if this societal issue is not address with urgency adolescent gang involvement numbers may continue to soar.

According to the Centers for disease control and Prevention adolescent at risk behavior includes suicide, teen drivers, teen pregnancy, teen smoking and use of alcohol and drugs, teen violence, bullying or cyber bullying, abuse, unprotected sex, sexual violence, gang affiliation, drug dealing (2015). With the raise in deviant behaviors by adolescents and adolescents growing presence in juvenile detention centers, one can understand why scholars are conducting study on predicting arrest in early adulthood and pathways to drug and sexual risk behaviors among detained adolescents. In article “Pathways to Drug and Sexual Risk Behaviors among Detained Adolescents” authors, Voisin, D. R., Neilands, T. B., Salazar, L. F., Crosby, R., & DiClemente, R. J. conducted a study to get to an understanding of the linking connection between community violence with sexual risk behavior and drugs, to also gain an adequate understanding of the pathways that mediate relationships, and furthermore to examine the interrelationships among the variables with detained youth (voisin 2008). The study’s findings indicated that community violence exposure was significantly associated with drug and sexual risk behavior among detained youth (voisin, 2008).
