INTRODUCTION

Contention Gandhi was mostly effective in achieving independence for India

Terms Evaluate – finding how valuable Gandhi was as a leader through his ideas about passive resistance that he introduced to his follower and how he used it to achieve independence

Effective Leader – is someone who doesn’t always successful, but able to bring change and new ideas to the society. An effective leader should have support from his follower, risk taker, and an intelligent communicator.

Achieved Independence – gain freedom as a country. Can rule its own country by its own people, not being rule by colonizer. Another case in India is to abolish caste system, as Gandhi wanted too.

Parameters In order to evaluate Gandhi’s leadership, this essay will consider the movement he persuaded or took part in, movement by his followers that was based on his ideas, and through some of his acts and speeches

    The Salt March was a form of civil disobedience because civil disobedience is a peaceful form of political protest, which the Salt March was, protestors used no violence to display their disagreements to the ban. Salt was a much-needed resource specifically for the Indians because of India’s hot weather which promotes sweating, hence drains the human body of its salt supply. There was salt that was available to the Indians but it was only from the British government.     After studying law in London, England, Mohandas returned to India where he was hired by an Indian Law Firm and subsequently sent to South Africa as a legal representative. Upon arrival, he began to observe the discrimination of Indian immigrants and native Africans in the country and vowed to make a change. During Gandhi’s twenty-year stay, he led an eight-year long campaign of civil disobedience that caused hundreds of Indians living in South Africa, including himself, to be imprisoned.     What I find most interesting about Mahatma Gandhi and his life and work is how he was a very spiritual leader to many people and people looked up to him as one of their hero’s. Mahatma Gandhi was considered a father of the Indian Independence Movement and believed in non-violence. I find it very interesting how Mahatma Gandhi went on a Salt March for 24 days and walked 241 miles with his satyagrahis to the coast where they had picked up salt. This Salt March happened in 1930 and Gandhi proposed his non-violence march protesting for the British Salt Tax and to help free India from the control British had over them. This lead into a protest closing many shops down in Britain and lead into war but Gandhi and satyagrahis believed in non-violence so they didn’t fight back to the police. This lead to many of them being killed immediately and because they didn’t fight back the world embraced their non-violence, which had caused them to gain their freedom back from Britain. Another thing I thought was really interesting about Mahatma Gandhi’s lifestyle was how he believed that Muslims had equal value to Hindus and that no one was better than any body else that everyone was equal to each other. This reminded me of Martin Luther King Jr. and how he wanted equality to make Blacks and Whites become one and I feel as if that’s what Mahatma Gandhi had wanted but for Muslims and Hindus to be as one and have equal values towards each other.…
