Skills and Characteristics of Mental Health Human Service Workers
Working in the human service field can be a very difficult job to accomplish for many people. Some people believe that this type of a job is a skill that you have to be born with, whereas other people believe you can be taught the right attitude. I believe the type of compassion that is involved in this field of work is something that the truly great service workers are born with. To those that they serve, the human services worker can become a great inspiration and can accomplish things that some people cannot. These individuals do not make the most amount of money and do not have as much free time as other occupations might allow. This group of people has to develop a unique personality to be able to cope with their job and expectations perceived of them. The people that work in the human service field are unique in their own sense of matter and have a very special place in society that is greatly underappreciated. The training that one goes through in order to be a human services worker is just the beginning of a long trek ahead of them. The personality that they must have is easier to develop than it is to create. The one’s that already have this personality have a slight advantage over the ones that do not. All of the bad habits of racism or prejudices established have got to be thrown aside in order to be an effective worker and be able to help the client as needed. Ethics play a big role as to whether or not a case worker is successful or not. Without ethics the case worker may not be able to do their job to the fullest of their capabilities. Getting rid of the instinct to be judgmental is also a key point. The last thing that a client needs is to be judged over and over again and to be put on the spot for their actions repeatedly.
