1. Executive Summary:
Though first mobile communication was launched in 1946 in USA, the development of mobile technology was stagnant till late 70’s due to technological constraint. The tremendous development of semi-conductor technology during this period and subsequent innovation of microprocessors in 1975 helped mobile to breakthrough commercially. Till further development of cellular technology, capacity problem was the key constraint of commercial mobile. In 1978total number of mobile (only in USA) was no above 10,000. Mobile technology up to this is termed as 0 Generation Mobile.
World Mobile market even after full maturity of 2.0G/2.5G technology is still striving to migrate to Third Generation. Second Generation which was supposed to be obsolete by this time, today still acquires 85% of the market share. 3G after 8 years (since 2001) of start acquires only 15%market share. 3GPP before significant deployment of WCDMA based 3G declares the OFDMA based new standard LTE. 3GPP in line technologies UMTS, HSDPA, HSPA, HSPA+ has not bothered for logical gap to offer for deployment. When critics are still asking about the success of 3G, declaration of LTE puts the situation yet complex. This is off course the investment challenge for the mobile operators. Though vendors are very much optimistic

Since the introduction of the first mobile phone in 1924, there has been a steady climb in developing and enhancing, the mobile phone and its supporting technologies. The cellular network infrastructures as well as service providers have been hard at work; in making sure they are providing the best service as well as devices. The infrastructure alone has gone through several life cycles. Which is required in order providers to keep up with growth and technology changes. Wireless cellular providers, at one point offered services that ran off analog frequencies. Today the wireless networks are built off of an all-digital network, which is considered to be in its 3rd generation. 3rd generation technologies include GSM, GPRS, UMTS and CDMA.…

The inventions by mobile industry incorporate:First Generation (1G) -The first generation mobile phone refers to the mobile phones that were developed in the 1980s. Second Generation (2G) -GSM, CDMA and TDMA are the different protocols that brought the mobile phone into the second generation stage. The 2G was introduced to the market basically in the early 1990s. Second And a Half Generation (2.5G) -Still under the same network protocol, but provided services such as WAP and GPRS enabling mobile phones to access on certain websites. Coloured screen with camera featured mobile phones were also introduced in this stage. Third Generation (3G) -A whole new network protocol launched in the twenty-first century. It is either under IMT-2000, UMTS or W-CDMA standards. The 3G protocol enables high speed connection (speed similar to broadband connection) to access through internet and also video calls.…

The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) started on the work of Evolution of 3G Mobile System at RAN Evolution Work Shop on November 2004 in Toronto, Canada. They opened a work shop to all interested organization and interested parties. Proposals on evolution of Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) were presented there. High level requirements such as reduced cost per bid, flexibility of existing and new frequency bands, simplified architecture, reasonable power consumption, user satisfaction with lower cost, and open interface were identified as well. Objective of developing a framework toward high data rate, low latency and packet optimized radio access technology were started. Agreement on requirement for Evolved UTRAN resulted “Technical Report (TR) 25.913 ” were made. In December 2005, downlink were identified to use Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and uplink uses Single Carrier – Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA). The use of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) was agreed as well. Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes as support. Paired spectrum operation named FD-LTE while unpaired spectrum as TD-LTE. New architecture, E-UTRAN with EPC (Evolved Packet Core) introduced. SA WG2 started study for System Architecture Evolution (SAE) to develop evolution or migration framework to high data rate, low latency, packet optimized system which supports multiple RATs. Future network will be on all-IP network and access to 3GPP network would not only via UTRAN or GERAN but by WiFi, WiMAX or wired technology. Release 8 of LTE was frozen in December 2008. In March 2009, first complete Release 8 specification was published.LTE development continues with Release 9 with complete specification by December 2009.
