Future of Nursing
The Future of Nursing

July 14, 2013

The Future of Nursing According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the nursing profession is the largest population in the nation 's health care workforce with over three million members. Because of this, nurses have a fundamental role in the transformation of the nation 's rapidly changing health care environment. To achieve this role, the IOM addressed several key recommendations to serve as a guide to the direction of the future of nursing (Institute of Medicine, 2010). This paper will focus on three areas that the IOM considers as obstacles the nursing profession encounter as they tackle the challenges of the changing health care system and how it will impact the future of nursing. These three areas are: Nursing Education, Nursing Practice, and Nursing Leadership.

Nursing Education Nursing education in the United States has long been a controversial issue. With having at least three educational routes to enter the nursing profession, levels of nursing education continue to be a topic of discussion in the health care industry. The IOM recognizes this obstacle in the education of nurses and calls for a transformation in this area in their report. One of their key messages states that "Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promote seamless academic progression" (Institute of Medicine, 2010) In the past, efforts to promote baccalaureate degree level as the entry level into the nursing profession has been met with a lot of resistance due in part to the nursing shortage. The Associate Degree nurses have met the growing health care needs and the nursing shortage. However, the growing population and changes in socio-economic environment create for a more-complex patient population in the nation today. This shift in patient needs and care environments require the health care team to have more competencies to deliver high quality care.

The articles make us accountable for our education, “nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training.” (Institute Of Medicine [IMO], 2010, p. 2) The article goes on to say also that nurses should achieve higher levels of education in order to provide delivery of safe, patient centered care. Patient needs are becoming more complex and competencies may be in order to maintain adequate knowledge to treat these illnesses. (IMO, 2010) Nurses need to take an active role in redesigning healthcare in the United States, many things are changing and everyone in the health care field needs to work together in order to positively change the system. These ideas are already affecting my nursing as it motivated me to finish what I have started and to put one hundred percent of myself into my education. These ideas challenge me to reach a higher potential than initially envisioned through this…

This IOM report strongly encourages our nursing population to obtain higher degrees. Not only does the committee prefer baccalaureate, master and doctorate prepared nurses, but they want to see our nursing population become more diverse. They want the nursing workforce to be leaders, able to meet the needs of all patients and able to deliver care at a higher standard. Health policy and health care financing competencies need to be included in the curriculum as well as leader ship, quality improvement and systems thinking (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011). The committee has set a goal for 80% of nurses to have a minimum of a BSN by the year 2020. In order for this goal to be met, several changes in our education programs need to occur. One change is…

Bachelor degree nursing programs are highly regarded for the skilled, clinical thinking, and professionalism of nurses they provide for the community. Obtaining a baccalaureate in nursing provides the same skills and knowledge encompassed in most associate’s programs, while allowing a broadened look into research, public health, management, and humanities (AACN IENP, 2012). Many facilities are now providing incentives for nursing staff to continue their education; from tuition reimbursement, an increase in pay, and played time off for the sole purpose of education. Research has proven that with a more educated nursing populous there is a decrease in morality rates and medication errors, and it also provides more positive outcomes (AACN Fact Sheet, 2012). With such a high demand for nurses, the scope of nursing has become more comprehensive with a larger responsibility being placed on nurses. All of this has shown not only to the medical field but also policymakers and other leaders of the community that a higher level of education not only makes a difference, but many feel it should be a requirement.…

One of the topics discussed in this report is the future of nursing education. The changes being made to our country’s healthcare system must include changes in nursing education prior to licensing and post license practicing nurses. With this change comes the need for a larger amount of nurses entering the workforce to have a bachelor’s degree or obtain it very early in the career. This report states that nurses must be adequately trained to care for a diverse population and to provide all patients safe and quality care and to perform as a leader. Nurses also must be prepared to care for patients in different care settings, such as, community and public health settings. The baccalaureate nurse receives this education whereas an associate’s degree nurse does not. Nurses should continue to educate themselves throughout the career with physicians and other healthcare professionals. A better educated nurse leads to better education for the patient thus possibly keeping them from an…

In the chapter Transforming Education, the IOM committee identified “major changes in the U.S. health care system and practice environments will require equally profound changes in the education of nurses both before and after they receive their licenses” (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine; Institute of Medicine [IOM ], 2011, p. 163). IOM recognizes studies that show a correlation between BSN prepared nurses and better patient outcomes. The committee strongly supports advanced education and recommends a goal of increasing the percentage of BSN prepared nurses to 80% by 2020. The report further calls for more advanced practice RNs, more qualified nursing instructors, and more nurse researchers educated at the doctorate level. The report stresses the “need to establish, maintain, and expand new competencies throughout a nurse’s education and career” (IOM, 2011, p. 164).…

It has been an ongoing debate for years as to what the minimum level of education nurses should have when entering the healthcare workforce. At the present time, there is still a hospital based diploma programs, Associate degree programs, and finally…

Since the passing of the 2010, Health Care Legislation Laws, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act, were instilled to increase the percentages of Americans having quality, affordable health care insurance coverage and making colleges more affordable and accessible to them. The Institute of Medicine developed a study to see how the nursing profession can be improved and to contribute to build a health care system that will meet the demand for safe, quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable care. (Institute of Medicine, 2010) There are three impacts on nursing that I will be focusing on in this report, the impact that the changes will have on our nursing practice, nursing education and nursing leadership. The IOM report calls for removing regulatory barriers to nursing practice, raising the education levels of the nursing workforce, and enhancing nursing’s leadership role in healthcare.…

In 2010, the United States healthcare system began its dramatic transformation as the president signed comprehensive healthcare legislation into law. The legislation, cumulatively referred to as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), offered 32 million, previously uninsured Americans, access to affordable health insurance (IOM, 2011). As Americans rejoiced and signed up for insurance, concern mounted as to whether the current healthcare system could tolerate the increased patient load. The nursing profession, in particular, was expected to face several obstacles in response to a transformed healthcare system (Trouble, 2014). According to an article in Health Affairs, addressing these obstacles requires effective production and use of the nursing workforce (Rother & Lavizzo-Mourey, 2009). In an effort to guide the impending increase of Americans expected to seek healthcare, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) along with the Committee on the Robert Wood Foundation (RWJF) formed an initiative on the future of nursing. The 2-year initiative served as an action-based model for the restructuring of the nursing profession (IOM, 2011). The committee identified four key messages that guided the IOM discussion including the future of nursing education, nursing practice and the nurse’s role as a leader. The key messages and recommendations of the initiative on nursing provided nurses with the unique opportunity to further define its role in the healthcare field.…

The IOM recommends the percentage of Baccalaureate level nurses reach 80% by 2020 because these nurses function with a higher level of competencies. According to the ANA, higher education “provides a more in depth treatment of the physical and social sciences, nursing research, public and community health, nursing management, and the humanities which enhances the student’s professional development and provides a foundation for progression to advance practice roles” (ANA, 2008). Today’s patient environments and needs are becoming more complex. Just as the health care system is transforming to meet these needs, nursing education has…

There is a significant need to increase the BSN enrollment as the majority of new nurse enrollment is at the associate degree in nursing level (Spencer, 2008, 312). It will be discussed, based on the article; Increasing RN-BSN Enrollments: Facilitating Articulation through Curriculum Reform, author Janine Spencer, RN, EdD, Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing, July 2008, the need for increasing the number of BSN prepared nurses in the workforce and how this may affect the nursing profession as a whole .”Research has shown that patient outcomes can be attributed to higher levels of nursing education” (Spencer, 2008, 312). It is necessary to increase the standard of education required to become a nurse, as well as providing each nurse with all the necessary knowledge and training required in leadership, culture, gerontology, ethics, research, theory based practice, and community health.…

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report released in 2010 entitled “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” called for drastic transformation within the nursing profession (, 2011). Specific changes were recommended in the fields of nursing practice, education and leadership. The Affordable Care Act, the rapid increase in the insured population, and the aging population will create increased demands on an already stressed healthcare system (, 2010, p. 85). The sweeping changes the report recommends are necessary to keep up with the very diverse and rapidly growing health care needs of the public and will change the face of healthcare as we know it today. There are many barriers that the profession of nursing must overcome if this is to be accomplished. The IOM is a not for profit, organization which was founded for the purpose of providing national advice with regard to biomedical science, medicine, and health. It functions independent of the U.S. federal government and provides “unbiased, evidence-based, and authoritative information and advice concerning health and science policy to policy-makers, professionals, leaders in every sector of society, and the public at large”("Institute of Medicine," 2013). The report caused me to reflect upon why I chose nursing as a profession and what I can do to enhance my skills to enrich my profession.…
