Fundamentals of Quality Healthcare Managing in a healthcare environment can often be hectic and present many challenges due to a constant change of policies and procedures. In order for any organization to be successful, the organization must identify goals and a plan to reach that goal set. To ensure that the organization is able to work effectively and provide quality care there are several processes available to produce quality care. These processes are strategic planning, performance improvement, and information systems. Each processes feeds directly into the next, when used correctly and simultaneously. These processes can greatly increase the quality of healthcare in an organization.
Strategic Planning Strategic planning is one of the key building blocks for ensuring that an organization is successful. An organization must know what the goals of the organization are and what processes are essential for success. A successful strategic planning process encompasses and engages performance improvement and outlines the uses of information systems within the organization. Strategic planning is management tools that can assist a healthcare organization reach its goals by using the most efficient resources and energy to achieve quality care. A strategic plan gives an organization shape and defines what an organization is by answering, what it does, why it does it, and what the desired future for the organization is (NAMAC, 2009). Five processes exist in strategic planning, mission and objectives, environmental scan, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, and evaluation and control, when used properly these processes will help establish the framework to be successful (QuickMBA, 2014).

    West Florida Regional Medical center (WFRMC) is located on the north side of Pensacola, Florida. It is associated with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), and “the West Florida Healthcare campus includes the all private room acute care hospital, the area’s only comprehensive physical rehabilitation hospital, and a mental health facility” (West Florida Hospital, 2010). When looking at the decision to invest heavily into total quality management (TQM), you must look at its history and hospital statistics of the Pensacola area. In 1992, there was intense competition between WFRMC and the other two hospitals within the area, Sacred Heart and Baptist Hospitals (McLaughlin & Kaluzny, 2006). “The 130 doctors practicing at the Medical Center Clinic and its satellite clinics admitted mostly to WFRMC, whereas most of the other doctors in this city of 150,000 practiced at both Scared Heart and Baptists Hospitals” (p.522). At the time it was estimated that 90% to 95% of patients that would be admitted into any of the hospitals would experience discounted prices due to the competition within the area. This discount applied to “mostly Medicare for the elderly, CHAMPUS for military dependents, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida for employed and their dependents” (p.522). Within the area and over the past four years a trend showed success with continuous quality improvement (CQI) with areas that utilized package prices for services required (McLaughlin & Kaluzny, 2006). This provided the basis for TQM, which would provide “ways to analyze and change processes to improve quality” (Banham, 1993).     Quality is what distinguishes one from the rest. People will spend more on high tech gadgets, nice clothing, and durable cars because there is the promise of quality. Quality is what is sought after by consumers and this idea does not change when taken into the context of healthcare. As a PA, we could see 100 patients a day, but none of that would matter if the patients did not get something out of the visit. A wasted day can be described as a day where you didn’t give it your all. When I go to a doctor or a PA, I want to be listened to. I want to be acknowledge as a patient with concerns and have those concerns addressed. I want to walk out of that office and feel as if I got some of my questions answered and know how to continue on from there. That is why reading all the magazines in a waiting room before I get called does not bother me because it makes me feel as if each case is being taken with care.     Strategic management can be used to determine an organization 's mission, vision, values, goals, objectives, roles and responsibilities, etc. Strategic planning is a management tool. As with any management tool, it is used to help an organization do a better job. It is used to focus its energy, to ensure that members of the organization are working toward common goals, to assess and fine-tune the organization 's direction in response to change. Essentially, strategic management is an effort to produce decisions and actions that guide what an organization is, what the organization does, and why it does it. Being strategic means being clear about the organization 's objectives, being aware of the organization 's resources, and incorporating both into being consciously responsive to a dynamic environment. The process is about planning because it involves intentionally setting goals (i.e., choosing a future) and developing an approach to achieving those goals. The process is disciplined and calls for a certain protocol to keep it focused. The process raises questions that help planners observe experience, test assumptions, gather information about the current situation, and anticipate the future environment. Finally, the strategic planning process is about fundamental decisions and actions because choices must be made in order to answer the sequence of questions mentioned above. The strategic plan is ultimately no more, and no less, than a set of decisions about what to do, why to do it, and how to do it. Because it is impossible to do everything that needs to be done in one day, strategic planning implies that some decisions and actions are more important than others. Much of the strategy depends on making the difficult decisions about what is most important to achieving success.     Strategic Plans A Strategic Plan is a comprehensive plan in relation to the organisation’s goals and objectives. A Strategic Plan is usually developed with a period of 3 to 5 years in mind. Environmental Scanning consists of scanning the environment and analyzing factors that could influence your organization.
