Functionalism Fast Food
I wonder what impact the fast food industry has had on society. The fast food industry has easily become one of the biggest industries around the world. More and more fast food restaurants have opened as a result of the number of consumers increasing. Within a mile of where I live there are about six fast food restaurants to choose from, and the number increases as you drive through the city. This plays an important role in the society as a whole when you realize the benefits that they possess. Therefore, I will explain to you how the fast food industry maintains the stability of society from the standpoint of a structural functionalist.

As there are a few options that I had to choose from, I decided to go to the local sushi place that I have visited a few times with my family. This place is not like your ordinary busy chain restaurant, ex. McDonalds, or Burger King, but instead an environment with more laxity. When you first walk in you are instantly greeted by the workers behind the counter. There is not much interaction between customers as everyone seats themselves as they wait for their order to be completed. This particular sushi restaurant has an open concept, meaning you can see them cooking your meal as you wait. As I am sitting there observing the environment, I can see how the workers communicate with each other. It is a notably friendly interaction, that also involves a power distance. "Masculine organizations emphasize competitiveness and aggressiveness. They stress the bottom line and reward their workers on the basis of their contributions to the organization"(Pearson, edition13). For one that industry causes a chain reaction for the consumer need of other businesses. Though healthy choices can be made when selecting a place to eat, people tend to go towards the unhealthy options. Immediately you see no issue in this, but long term consumption of the unhealthy choices fast food has to offer will lead to health problems. With that being said we know now see the need for another major key in society which is the healthcare providers. The longer a citizen goes along with the unhealthy decisions, the higher the chances of that person needing more doctor visits than the average citizen in this country. Along with the spike in healthcare needs, another major key is job placement. We have restaurants appearing on just about every corner, and economically that means more jobs for the thousands of people who are unemployed and seeking employment. The increase in people seeking gym memberships are also correlated to the rise in the amount of fast food consumers that we
