Case Management The function of case management is one that has been built upon and confounded over time which requires clarification as in its present form it does not only relate to social work. Case management has been documented into the early 1900's with the guiding principles of mental health practice used by social work and psychiatric practitioners who focused on long-term care and management within the community (AmericanNursesCredentialingCenter, 2012, p. 22). Case management practice would be further developed by introducing the concept that chronic management of needs could be elaborated upon by not only focusing on mental health needs but also the psychosocial and environmental needs of the individual(Kanter, 2010). One of the major changes to case management practice occurred during the 1976 JCAH report that coined the use of the term "case management" and supported the separation of clinical work from direct services provided by case management work (Kanter, 2010, p. 9). In addition, the 80's brought about a change to the medical field by introducing new billing practices encouraging the adoption of case management by other disciplines(AmericanNursesCredentialingCenter, 2012, p. 22). As other disciplines in the medical field utilized social work case work principles to create a practice model that would help manage costs and finances the client’s clinical needs were no longer the main focus of case management. There is a variety of definitions to case management, but presently the nursing organizations The Case Management Society of America (CMSA) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center report acknowledge these definitions but explain that their definition is a predominant definition
