Fruits of Malaysia
Fruits of Malaysia

Malaysia is blessed with a large variety of fruits. Most of us enjoy eating these fruits. They range from very sweet ones that make our teeth hurt to very sour ones that make our teeth numb. Whatever our preference we can always find some that we like. Some fruits are seasonal while some fruits are perennial. The famous durian, which is also known as the ‘king of fruits’, is a seasonal one. This fruit appears in abundance around the month of May and once again around the month of December every year. The popularity of this fruit is undisputed as people from all walks of life can be seen surrounding the vendors when the durians are in season. The average size of a durian is that of a football. Its outer skin is hard and spiny. We have to be very careful not to be pricked by the many sharp spines. Inside the durian is a different story altogether. A good durian contains seeds coated with sweet yellow flesh. The flesh also emits a powerful aroma that needs getting used to. Most locals love the taste and smell but visitors to our country usually find the smell unbearable. Other seasonal fruits are the rambutan, langsat, duku, rambai, mangosteen and so on. All of them have their unique taste and are consumed in large quantities when they are in season.Off season we have the perennial fruit like banana, guava, mango, pineapple, papaya etc. They can be found in every fruit stall.
There are also other fruits like the mata kuching that are not so popular. There are also poisonous fruits that no one dares to touch. All in all I woud say that we are very fortunate to live in a land which is not only rich with its different races and cultures but is also filled with succulent fruits that we can enjoy to our hearts’ delight.

Rowan Jacobsen’s Fruitless Fall: The Collapse of the Honey Bee and the Coming Agricultural Crisis reminds me of the movie, The Lorax. In the movie, all the trees are cut down to make scarf, and the town becomes an inhabitable place to live. People have to buy oxygen in large gallons. Humans are omnivore, and also we are frugivore. Almost every day, after waking up, brushing my teeth and cleaning my face, I would eat fruit for breakfast: cherries, berries, apple, banana, and any other fruits that I can find in Morris or Alexandria. However, my favorite fruit of all is the king of fruits, the durian. Without bees, there will be no fruits. As Jacobsen (2008) mentioned in Fruitless Fall, most of the plants cannot produce the fruits without insects.…

Storage – The fruit itself has a long shelf life, and can last up to three weeks in dry storage. As with all fresh produce, try to keep the fruit out of hot and humid conditions, which will simply cause the fruit to harden. If the fruit is stored in cool and humid conditions, it could last for at least one month. For the best results, wrap the fruit in paper…

"Fruits and nuts are important ingredients in many Hawaiian dishes. This included bananas, citrus fruits, pineapples, coconuts, guavas, litchis, jackfruit, mangoes, melons, papayas, and passion fruit. However, these fruits were never eaten or added to dishes unless they are fresh. For instance, coconuts provided juice for drinking, sap for fermentation, and milk or cream used in numerous stewed dishes" (Kittler, p 340).…

The idiom, “Comparing apples and oranges” has been implemented for a prolonged amount of time in order to convey a vast difference between two things. When the phrase is used it provokes the thought that the items are incomparable and as a result, ridiculous to compare. As an idiom it’s meaning is immediately apparent, but when carefully examined as a statement rather than a metaphor, there are similarities, along with differences between apples and oranges that can easily be seen as comparable. Through their physical uses, their use in popular stories, and their physical make-up there are many comparisons and contrasts that can be found. As a result of the comparability between the two, the idiom should become inapplicable.…

Wertit Soegeng-Reksodihardjo (1962), author of The Species of Durio with Edible Fruits, mentions that although the durian fruit “may not be universally esteemed, it is certainly the most highly valued and the most desirable of the seasonal fruits throughout the countries of southeastern Asia” (p. 270). The durian is infamous for its distinctive odor, the unique scent of the durian meat can penetrate through the intact husk. According to Soegeng-Reksodihardjo, the origin of the durian fruit is native to western Malaysia (p. 277). The durian trees are not difficult to plant, given the right climate, and require little care or maintenance. Soegeng-Reksodihardjo found that there were durian…
