Friends: Leslie
Friends are people whom we turn to when our spirits need a lift. They are always by our side through thick and thin. They stand beside us even when our disposition is not perfectly right and will fight for us if we are oppressed. Therefore, it is clear that friends play a vital role in shaping who we are today. But what qualities exactly do we need to look for in a friend? That is why I have decided to write an essay about The New Girl. This story circles around five friends Amy, Bella, Chloe, Daisy and Emily. They called themselves the ABCDE girls. They were bosom friends ever since primary school. Anyway, these five girls loved each other dearly. One day, Emily saw a notice on the board. It read that anyone interested in joining a talent competition, could hand in their names. She quickly gathered up her friends and broke the news to them. All five girls decided to do a dance. As Amy was the best dancer, they decided to have the dance routine at her house. When they reached Amy’s house, her mom was busy preparing milkshakes for them. Amy flung her bag down and ran upstairs. She opened her mail to check if there was news from her friend, Leslie in Singapore. To her excitement, she found an inbox in her e-mail. Amy jumped in happiness when she read it. Leslie said that she would be coming to USA for three months. They will be neighbors. Amy ran down. She flopped into the chair beside Bella. The girls then discussed about the timetable for practices. By the time her friends went back, it was around six in the evening. Amy told her mother about Leslie’s arrival. The practices were carried out at Amy’s house as scheduled. The next excitement was that Leslie was due to arrive at the airport. Amy got ready to go to the airport. Upon reaching there, she waited for Leslie. Once Leslie reached, Amy eloped her into a hug. On the way home, Amy told Leslie everything she needed to know. The day after, the two girls went to school. Amy’s friends were a little shocked to

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

The friendship been portrayed in this novel is a realistic portrayal of the teenagers’ lives in contemporary Australia. The central character Josie and her friends Sera, Anna and Lee are the example of realistic friendship. They are very good friends with each other, although there were a few minor arguments between Josie and Sera because of the different concepts they have, but they still managed to get along pretty well. They have done some crazy things together; they went to visited a famous band’s lead singer at the Sebel Town House during the school annual walk-a-thon, because they thought that singer was the most gorgeous guy in the world. This is very realistic with Australian teenagers; teenage girls always fancy towards their favourite idol or the hot-looking guys. Their friendship is very trustworthy and protective. “We tend to mother her a lot, and if we’re ever in a risky situation, like being squashed at a concert or terrorized by the students of Cook High, Anna’s the first person we try to protect.” (P19) This quote shows that they always try to protect Anna because they know she is a very nervous person. There are many Australian teenagers who like to hang out with their own groups of friends and help their friends if needed, just like Josie’s group in this novel.…
