Friction on a Surface
Friction on a surface.

Aim: To establish the relation between weight of a rectangular wooden block lying on a horizontal table and the minimum force required to just move it using a spring balance

Materials required: A rectangular block of wood with a hook , set of weights, strong thread and a spring balance.

Theory: The force of friction acting on a block of wood is proportional to the normal reaction acting on the block. By the third law of motion, normal reaction is equal to the weight of the object. So friction will depend on the weight of the object.

Procedure.: Measure the weight of the wooden block using the spring balance. Place the wooden block on the table. Attach one end of the thread on the hook and the other end on the spring balance. Slowly pull the wooden block holding the spring balance, gradually increasing the force. Record the reading on the spring balance when the block just starts moving Record your values in the tabular column. Repeat the experiment by increasing the weight of the block by placing extra weights on the wooden block. Plot a graph of net weight of the block against the minimum force required to move it.

Result ; The minimum force required to move the block was found to be directly proportional to the weight of the block.

Precautions;
1. The surface should be free of dust and Greece.
2. Thread should be inextensible.
3. Make sure that the thread is strong enough to withstand the force.
4.Take the reading exactly when the block starts moving

    One end of a spring is attached to a solid wall while the other end just reaches to the edge of a horizontal, frictionless tabletop, which is a distance h above the floor. A block of mass M is placed against the end of the spring and pushed toward the wall until the spring has been compressed a distance X, as shown above. The block is released, follows the trajectory shown, and strikes the floor a horizontal distance D from the edge of the table. Air resistance is negligible.…

    2. Tension, Weight: You are part of a team to help design the atrium of a new building. Your boss, the manager of the project, wants to suspend a 20-lb sculpture high over the room by hanging it from the ceiling using thin, clear fishing line (string) so that it will be difficult to see how the sculpture is held up. The only place to fasten the fishing line is to a wooden beam which runs around the edge of the room at the ceiling. The fishing line that she wants to use will hold 20 lbs. (20-lb test) so she suggests attaching two lines to the sculpture to be safe. Each line would come from the opposite side of the ceiling to attach to the hanging sculpture. Her initial design has one line making an angle of 20o with the ceiling and the other line making an angle of 40o with the ceiling. She knows you took physics, so she asks you if her design can work.…

    Abstract In this experiment, we test factors which effect friction. We pulled a wood block across a surface to determine whether the surface area of the block or the type of surface effects friction. We found that the surface area of the block did not change the coefficient of kinetic friction, while the types of materials in contact were directly related to the coefficient of kinetic friction.
