While Louis XVI was hidden in his palace peasants became unemployed and starved. They tended to wonder out of boredom and anger. There started to be mass vandalism and looting. The National Assembly, renamed Third estate, got together and discussed what to do. The Declaration of the Rights of Man was created. Louis XVI didn’t want to accept these reforms. Nobles didn’t accept it either because they enjoyed their status. When a mob of woman peasants went to Versailles in search of food the royal family was taken hostage. They remained prisoners for a few years. The National Assembly had achieved their victory over the king. After dealing with the Nobles the National Assembly turned its attention to the clergy. These list of grievances, or cahiers de doleances, were drawn up in a list but there was no follow up by the king and also led to conflict between the estates from not wanting to lose any power or money.…

The peasant’s in Medieval Europe had an extremely hard and harsh lifestyle (www.historylearningsite.co.uk). When children were born to peasants, it was almost guaranteed that that child would remain a peasant for his or hers entire life (www.westernreservepublicmedia.org). Most peasants worked for lords in fields as farmers. During the farming year, there were also many different jobs besides planting and harvesting that had to be done on time and only during a certain time to make sure the harvest would be plentiful and beneficial for the lords (www.historylearningsite.co.uk). Other jobs included tradesman, tavern owners, and millers, but most became farmers (www.westernreservepublicmedia.org). The feudal system of the time operated on the premise of peasants or serfs, and thanes, or lords. The lords owned the land, and the peasants worked on it. In turn, they received the protection of the lord in hard times. The countries were at peace, and even though the people worked hard, they were happy and prosperous. “…but the labour was rewarded: there was plenty to eat and drink, and plenty of space, and plenty of virgin land for ambitious people to clear and cultivate” (Howarth 11).…

The economic portion of feudalism was centered on the lord's estates or manor, and is called manorialism. A lord's manor would include peasant villages, a church, farm land, a mill, and the lord's castle or manor house. All economic activity occurred on the manor. This meant that little to no trade occurred during this time period. Most of the peasants during the middle Ages were serfs. Serfs were generally farmers who were tied to the land. They were not slaves because they could not be bought or sold, but they could not readily leave the manor either. Serfs were given land to farm in exchange for service to their lord. This service usually involved working the lord's fields, maintaining roads and the manor, and providing military service in times of war. Serfs paid taxes to their lord in the form of crops. This is also how the paid the fee to use the manor's mill or other services.…
