It was the year of 1992, in the city of
Los Angeles, when large widespread riots were sparked. On April 29th, a jury acquitted four Los Angeles Police Department officers accused of the videotaped beating of African-American motorist Rodney
King following a high-speed pursuit through the city.
After that day, and the 6 that followed, thousands of people rioted through the city, angered by the verdict. Damages of around US$1 billion dollars were incurred, and 53 people died along with thousands more injured.
Based on the best-seller novel ‘The
Freedom Writers Diary’ by Erin Gruwell, director and writer Richard LaGravenese
– best known for his films “P.S. I Love
You”, “Paris, je t'aime”, and “The Fisher
King”, which earned him an Academy
Award nomination – sets his film in Long
Beach, California, just after the riots occurred.
“True stories resonate with me”, Says Swank
We’re first introduced to Eva, an innocent young girl of Latino decent brought up in a lifestyle of drive-by shootings and a world full of prejudice. Whilst playing in her home, Eva, naïve and unaware of what is happening around her, watches as white policemen take away her innocent father to be locked up forever.
Eva’s whole world is turned up side down and as she grows into a young woman, she becomes accustomed to the ways of the city. “In Long Beach, it all comes down to what you look like. It’s all about colour. If you’re Latino or Asian or
Black you can get blasted any time you walk out your door”; and this is what
LaGravenese created this film about.
Hilary Swank plays the role of Erin
Gruwell in this gripping and emotional story of inner city kids born and raised into violence, death and drugs.
First time teacher, Erin, is an idealistic
24-year-old straight out of college. She is dropped into Roe Wilson High School, a formerly high-achieving school, which had recently had an integration program put in place. As her first teaching position,

If a movie states, “based on a true story”, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all history or facts portrayed in the movie are true. Most of the time directors of the movies place such words in the beginning of the movie to gain more support of the public and depict instances that may or may not be one hundred percent accurate. Taking history down a creative route can have its positive notes and its negative. Portraying history in a movie allows filmmakers to make a point about a modern issue or promote an ongoing historical topic. Just exemplifying history in a movie, doesn’t depict the fact that it is accurate. “Gangs of New York ” directed by Martin Scorsese in 2002, and set in 1863, explains the Irish immigration and ongoing Civil War. This movie is quiet t historically accurate, but still has some minor inaccuracies.…

The Officers were acquitted of all charges, the community was furious with the outcome of the case. Protesters immediately took to the street in light of recent court decisions. The Protest did not stay peaceful for long and soon there was all out violence and crime throughout the city of Los Angeles. The black community started attacking anyone who was not black pulling. For instance, “Reginald Denny, a white truck driver, was dragged from his truck and severely beaten by several angry rioters”(Staff, 1992).Throwing rock at other race people and even pulling them out of their cars for a quick beatdown for no apparent fault of the victim. Meanwhile the chief of police was attending a fundraiser on the other side of Los Angeles. As the night came the crime start to escalate with random fire by the dozen spread throughout the city. By nightfall mayor Bradley declared a “state of emergency asking california governor to send two thousand national guardsmen”(Medina,2012). Violence, fires, looting, and deaths continued to increase throughout the night. Violence spread throughout major cities in the US. Among them was Seattle, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Atlanta. The following day violence continued even though the national guard was there. Much controversy was on the issue if the national guard should use live ammunition. The National guard decided not to and the riots continued to spread. That same day Rodney king went in front of camera and plead with the citizen of Los Angles and and cities throughout the nation to keep the peace, using the famous quote…

Four officers were charged with the merciless beating of Rodney King. For the first time the world got to see what it was like to be a victim of brutality? King suffered extensive and painful injuries, to include head and face trauma, skull fractures, and nerve damage. The recorded video was powerful evidence against the worst type of police brutality. This event not only proved that some police officers abused their power but also reinforced the distrust between some minority communities and law enforcement. People from all walks of life and different races all waited to see what would happen to the officers involved. As many people predicted if the officers involved were not found guilty of assault and other civil liberties violations…

By reviewing the United State's track record on wars, it is quite obvious that the United States has never heard of "minding your own beezwax." In Eugene Jarecki's documentary film, Why We Fight, he shares with his audience the history of the United States involvement in wars. He especially reviews the 2003 Iraq invasion and its corrupt motives. After viewing Jarecki's movie, I have to completely agree with the film maker's assertion on how Americans have been lied to by the government because of their pursuit for economic and political dominance.…

I was raised all my life in the theater and I have taken lessons of everything that has to do with fine arts. Two of my passions are dance and sing, that is why my interest has been created for musicals. One time I saw this musical for the first time, I knew it has something special, but I was a little girl and I did not realized the meaning. Once I grew up and I could understand what was happening this musical become part of my life. The musical I love is RENT, a Broadway musical and Tony awards winner, that has been adapted in a movie. The genre of this musical is drama, musical, romance and I could say social issues. The story and concept was created by the actor, musician and producer Jonathan Larson, and also he was inspired by the french scene "La vie de Bohème" by Henri Murger , that has been also adapted to opera called "La Bohème" by Giacomo Puccini. The director and producer of the movie RENT is Chris Columbus and the screenplay was written by Stephen Chbosky. The movie was filmed on 2005 and they used the first cast from the Broadway musical. Lincoln Movie Review

The movie Lincoln, directed by the infamous Steven Spielberg, is based on the life of Abraham Lincoln and his efforts to pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which would abolish slavery completely. With the assumption that the Civil War would end in one month, however, Abraham feels it it is imperative to pass the amendment by the end of January, thus removing any possibility that slaves who have already been freed may be re-enslaved. Radical Republicans believe the amendment will be defeated, due to the support of it not being completely assured, since they prioritize the issue of ending the war. Even if all of them are ultimately brought on board, the amendment will still require the support of several Democratic congressmen if it is to pass. With dozens of Democrats having just lost their re-election campaigns in the fall of 1864, some of Lincoln's advisers believe that he should wait until the new Republican-heavy Congress is seated, presumably giving the amendment an easier road to passage. Lincoln, however, remains adamant about having the amendment in place and the issue of slavery settled before the war is concluded and the southern States reintegrated into the Union.…

Alzheimer is the most common cause of dementia, characterized by gradual deterioration of memory and the personality and marked by the formation of plaques of beta-amyloid and tangles of tau protein in the brain. In the movie, Away From Her, the clinic provided services to people with Alzheimer’s disease. Majority of the people admitted to this clinic were the elderly. There were two floors where the patients resided. First floor was for patients with early and beginning stages of the disease. The second floor was for patients that developed further along in the disease and could not function without the aid of a caretaker. The facility provided a large open area for patients to socialize with others, a dining room and leisure room with puzzles, television, and other fun activities. It always had a nurse on the floor to watch over the facility.…

After watching the film A&P in comparison to the discussion in the classroom, a lot of the topics are current trends and issues in the 20th century. There can be much discussion about many things in the film. After watching the film however rather than from the reading and discussion in class, I pictured things differently in my own mind. Upon first trying to relate it to the 1960’s, I actually thought the film was pretty modern and could be possible in today’s times, depending on a store and its’ management, whether an independently owned little store or a big box grocery store.…
