The colonists had endured much turmoil before the 1770s. Colonists had to fight the Native Americans and Spanish for their land. Furthermore, there was the French and Indian War in which the colonists joined forces for the first time to defeat the French and Native Americans for their land. It was during this time that the colonists learned that if they worked together, they were capable of achieving things on their own, without the help of the British. There is not one simple cause of the Revolutionary War but events that create a chain reaction. These events are as follows: the Stamp Act and taxation, colonial unity and resistance to this taxation, and Great Britain’s response to the colonial resistance.…
§ At the start of the war Britain had the best-equipped and most disciplined army, along with a navy that was unopposed in American waters…
The patriots defeated the British in Princeton, Bennington, Saratoga, Oriskany, Ft. Stanwix, Concord, Valley Forge, Trenton, and Yorktown. The Winter at Valley Forge was a lose for the patriots, over 2,000 men died that winter, and many gave up and went back home to their families. These victories have caused loses in large numbers and bigger hopes and dreams of our Patriotic forces. There were some patriot loses: Philadelphia, Brandywine, Germantown, New York City, and Ft. Ticonderoga. The victory in Yorktown was our last but one of our greatest victories this whole revolution. The 17,000 American and French troops that were sent into the battlefield made the British General Cornwallis surrender his troops and himself in October 19,1781. It…
Politically, the American Revolution was more of an accelerated evolution, despite some drastic choices that indicate a cataclysmic revolution. The political causes for the American Revolution began with many new acts being passed by the British parliament to put taxes on certain items in the colonies. The French and Indian War had cost Britain a lot of money and King George ll wanted help in paying the expenses. New taxes passed by the government gradually began to anger the colonists more and more, once they realize the unfairness of another country thousands of miles away telling them what to do. Acts like the Stamp Act gave Britain power over the colonies and the colonists eventually began to resist them. For example, the Stamp Act of 1765 was passed to cover the cost of keeping British troops in America. It put a tax on all printed items sold in America, which many colonists thought was unfair. In response, nine assemblies in the colonies sent delegates to New York City in October, 1765 to protest the loss of American rights and liberties. They challenged the Stamp Act by declaring only colonist’s elected representatives could tax them. The colonists believed in “no taxation without representation”. They petitioned for a repeal of the Stamp Act, but the British government did not listen. The Stamp Act and Stamp Act Congress show that the American Revolution was an accelerated evolution…
It is obvious that in order to win a war one must have a strong military. After fighting various battles, the American Military was weakened. Without the help of the French military, the colonists would have never gained their independence. The colonists were no match for the powerful British Military. The French supplied ten hundred thousand troops along…
Often times today, we Americans forget that our independence was not simply given, but earned after a long and hard fought conflict known as the Revolutionary War. Mainly between the British and the colonists, the war lasted 7 years. It wasn’t until two years in that the Americans finally had their chance to win, a year when the British were certain they could bring this rebellion to an end. The Battle of Saratoga was a major turning point in the war that gave the Americans a new sense of confidence and convinced the French to become official American allies (“Battle of Saratoga”).…
If it wasn't for the colonists spirit, they would have never won. A lot of the reason why the British didn't win even though they had the best military/navy in the world was because they had no motivation to win. Most of the soldiers didn't really care about the American territory and the British had problems in other parts of the world they…
The British are said to have won the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Charlestown Peninsula fell under British control. Even though the inexperienced Americans lost, the battle built up the front, convincing the Americans that patriotic dedication could override the more skillful British. The Battle was the first action for the Continental Army and further more showed how much work needed to be done in the molding of an affective army. Also, the costly victory at the Battle of Bunker Hill made the British realize that the war against the American colonies would be very hard to…
The American Revolution began in 1775 as open conflict between the united thirteen coloniesand Great Britain. By the Treaty of Paris that ended the war in 1783, the colonies had won their independence. While no one event can be pointed to as the actual cause of the revolution, the war began as a disagreement over the way in which Great Britain treated the colonies versus the way the colonies felt they should be treated. Americans felt they deserved all the rights of Englishmen. The British, on the other hand, felt that the colonies were created to be used in the way that best suited the crown and parliament. This conflict is embodied in one of the rallying cries of the American Revolution: No Taxation Without Representation.…
The Revolutionary War was one of the most important events in history for America and Britain. The war, in a way, helped America become its own nation and declare independence from Britain. At the time of the Revolutionary War, the English were in control of the Americans. Both sides had crucial advantages over each other that decided the outcome of the war. Let’s start with colonists; one of the biggest advantages they had over Britain was they had a major cause for wanting to fight. They were fighting for their independence, pride, liberty and the rights they deserved. They had a desire to win which was probably stronger than England’s desire because they were fighting for their own cause. Another major advantage America had was how far away from home the British were. They were over 3,000 miles from home, leading to poor communication with supply lines and their leaders. America was unfamiliar territory for the English which was another major advantage the colonists had. It was difficult for the British to capture and hold territory because of how large America was. America knew the ins and outs of their own land, including where to hide and shortcuts. Another reason America had an advantage over Britain was that the English citizens were tired of war. The war had begun to turn into years and citizens were getting tired of paying taxes and just the war in general. In my opinion one of the biggest advantages the colonists had was how great a leader George Washington was. American soldiers were outnumbered and not as well trained as the English soldiers, but because of Washington’s brilliance and strategy it helped the colonists prevail over Britain. On the other hand Britain also had many advantages over the Americans. A major advantage the British had was they were very wealthy and could pay their soldiers to fight. They also had much more supplies for their…
From the beginning of the Revolutionary War it seemed like a dead give away, most assumed the British were going to win because they not only possessed the largest navy in the world, but one of the strongest; on top of that they were working with a well established and organized military with some of the most experienced generals of their time. But these advantages seemed to have no impact on the 13 colonies whom had the desire and…
Identify and explain three factors (there are many) that helped the American colonies defeat the British in the Revolutionary War. Colonial forces were clearly outmatched by the British in sheer numbers, training, experience and equipment. Despite the clear advantage held by British forces, the American colonies managed to defeat them by making allies, using new innovative combat techniques, and by possessing the homefield advantage. A combination of all of these advantageous attributes allowed the American forces to overcome their superior enemy. If American forces would have confronted their adversary in a conventional way they would have been crushed by the experienced British forces.…
At the start of the American Revolutionary War the odds were pitted heavily in favor of an easy British victory. The British had the largest empire in the world at the time, the largest navy, and the best trained standing army of the day. America only had a militia, no means of raising money to obtain supplies, and no navy. Also Britain had just finished winning a war to defeat France, which gave the French a reason to help the colonies later in the war. However, even though the British were expected to win, both America and Britain had tactics that were both alike and dissimilar; which in turn played a pivotal role in the outcome of the war. What really helped the colonists during the war was a change…
Why the Americans won the Revolution The Americans won the Revolutionary War against the British due to three important advantages they had in the war. The first advantage they possessed was the fact that they were fighting on and knew their own land. The British had to move their troops and supplies across the ocean. The Americans did not have to. In addition, it was hard for the British to get reinforcement and when their ships were blocked, they had no support.…
The American Revolution embarked the beginning of the United States of America. A war that lasted eight years, 1775-1783, was able to grant the thirteen colonies the independence they deserved by breaking free of British rule. The war was an effect of the previous French and Indian War, which forced England to tax the American colonist, compelling them to rebel against parliament. From the 1760’s to 1775, many factors lead up to the American Revolution such as the various acts the British Parliament passed to pay the war debt, no representation in parliament, and the American people wanting to gain their independence. “No Taxation without Representation”, a slogan used by the American colonist, was the most important cause of the colonists declaring war for their independence on the British government.…
