Free Fall Summary

Summary of the Free Fall Experiment
This is a summary of the web-based document on the Free Fall experiment at: http://faraday.physics.utoronto.ca/IYearLab/Intros/FreeFall/FreeFall.html. See that document for the complete discussion. Here we summarise that document in a form suitable for printing.

Equations of Motion
In the absence of air resistance:

where: s = the position at time t s0 = the position at time t = 0 v0 = the speed at time t = 0 g = the acceleration due to gravity. When there is air resistance, it is characterised by a constant :

Then the equation of motion is approximately:

The Apparatus
The precision of the metal scale is one part in 4000. The accuracy of the timer is within its reading error of 0.05 msec. The minimum distance between the suspended object and the Start Gate should be about 10 cm. The minimum distance between the Start Gate and the Stop Gate should be about 10 cm. The maximum distance between the Start Gate and the Stop Gate should be the maximum provided by the apparatus. You should take 10 or so datapoints for both the streamlined bob and the plastic sphere.

Make sure that when the streamlined bob is suspended from the magnet that its oscillations have stopped before releasing it. Do not tighten the knob that holds the photogates in place too tightly.

Data Analysis
Putting the data for both the streamlined bob and the plastic sphere into a single dataset is a good idea. A good fit has: The chi-squared statistic approximately equal to the number of degrees of freedom. Residuals that are randomly distributed about zero. A poor fit has: A chi-squared much greater than or much less than the number of degrees of freedom. Residuals that show a systematic deviation from zero. One or more fitted parameters that are zero within

The Giant Drop is a vertical free fall, looming 119m meters above the ground. Carried by a mechanical lift to the very top, it then plummets, reaching up to 135km/hr due to the acceleration of gravity, before finally coming to a stop with the magnetic braking system (Burton, 2009). A rider on this type of design will experience three phases of apparent weight: the lifting, falling and braking stages. At first, the rider will feel heavier as the carriage accelerates. Then, as the velocity is constant, the apparent weight will equal that of the real weight. Finally, as the ride slows at the top, the decreasing velocity will result in a lighter feel. During free fall, riders will feel weightless, before experiencing a dramatic increase in apparent weight during the braking stage. As the ride climbs upwards, the exerted kinetic energy is converted into gravitational…

During the object’s fall air resistance acts as an ‘upward’ force that works against the weight force – produced by the object’s mass. As surface area is the selected independent variable, weight will remain constant, meaning that the ‘downward’ force will also remain consistent. That said, the changing surface area will invoke a changing ‘upward’ force, thus implying that the resultant force will also change; making for a measurable relationship between surface area and speed of travel.…

The goal behind this experiment was to estimate the distance a ball would travel after it falls a certain distance and bounces off a metal plate which has an angle of 45 degrees. To find this we had to take the basic equations for kinematics which are (1/2)at2=x and v=v0+at and combine them to make an equation that will help us solve for the distance the ball will travel after hitting the bounce plate. The equation came out to be R=g*(sqrt(2)/sqrt(g))*(sqrt(H)*sqrt(h)), as that g is acceleration of gravity, h is the height of bounce plate, and H is the height of where the ball will be dropped. After completing this experiment the result was that the standard deviation was +/- 2.3 cmfrom the average value of 26.5cm. This was used for each variable H was 20cm and h was 20cm. Also there 18 trials performed as well.…

Free fall is defined as the ideal falling motion of an object that is subject only to the earth’s gravitational field. To prove the law of conservation of energy, the free fall motion of an object can be represented through 3 different analyses; position of the object vs. time, velocity of the object vs. time, and acceleration of the object vs. time. It is observed in this ball toss experiment, at any point during the free fall period, the system contains the same total amount of mechanical energy. This amount is the sum of kinetic and gravitational potential energy.…

During this laboratory exercise we attempted to show that the force of gravity has the same effect on all falling bodies near the earth. We intended to show this by dropping several objects in normal atmospheric conditions, and in a vacuum chamber. Our tests showed that while everyday experience may indicate that not all objects fall toward the earth at the same rate, they are submitted to the same force of gravity.…

It was an early Sunday morning on Delta flight 6767 that departed Huntsville, Alabama at 07:20 on a sunny April morning when I made the decision to jump. Obviously I wasn’t considering jumping out of the short one hour and five minute commercial flight from Huntsville International Airport to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, but I had made up my mind. Quite a few months before this particular day, my friend had mentioned her desire to go skydiving. My response to her enthusiasm and set in stone decision to do such a thing matched the reactions I received when I told my close friends and family that I was at a Skydiving Center in Miami and prepping for a jump. However what made me decide to jump on this particular day was a strong feeling of claustrophobia, most people would sum this up to being on a 70 passenger aircraft, which is considered small in the airline industry, at least for a commercial airline it was pretty small. I though was feeling claustrophobic in the sense that I was being trapped by all these limitations, from which I was unable to release myself. Once we had landed in Atlanta, I pulled out my blue Samsung flip phone to send my friend a text message, and told her how I had decided I would go skydiving with her if she hadn’t already gone ahead and done it. I pressed send, and about five seconds later got a confirmation that the text had been sent, and twenty cents had been deducted from my AT&T prepaid GoPhone. With no surprise I never got a reply to the message, but I knew that if she did receive it we weren’t about to make arrangements to go right away and that it was going to be something in the, hopefully near, future.…

In the book, Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy, Joseph Stiglitz discusses the key factors that caused the financial crisis of 2008 that led to the global recession. Throughout the book, Stiglitz points out the mistakes made prior to the crisis and proposes changes that he feels must be made in order to prevent a similar financial crisis from reoccurring. He discusses the need to overhaul and regulate the financial sector. In addition, Stiglitz a former economic advisor during the Clinton Administration is sharply critical of the Bush and Obama Administration’s subsequent handling of the crisis.…
